So I was so disappointed after hearing about the fact that no formatting is allowed in the M11D, where only deletions with SD and internal memory are to be done in Fotos or on one's computer, I sent it back unopened. Simplicity is not caring around my iPhone to change settings etc. Why complicate a nice M11 workflow I am already using with little effort.

I still wanted that D type of experience. I seldom look at my LCD anyway, but like changing some settings on the fly. So I exchanged the M11D for an M11P and decided to get a Luigi case that is 100% full case with no chance to look at the LCD without removing the case or attaching an EVF.

After each day of shooting I remove the SD card and copy files to my RAW RAID drives or external drive if traveling-the more backups the better. Then if wanted I reformat the SD card in camera as Leica has said many times is the best way to format the SD cards.

So I will be having an M11D experience with an M11P, I hope. I will not use a small SD card to replicate a roll of film. I can do that in my M6.

You are really making a bigger deal than it is out of the M11-D not having the option to format, I see you complain about it everywhere. But I'm glad you found a way to use the M11-P in a similar way, enjoy! I'm not sure how you are formatting in-camera with the case on and not being able to look at the LCD though.

I’ve got to agree with Mr Power here, there’s a lot to get worked up about in this world, my life and even WRT Leica from time to time but this isn’t it. The irony is reinforced by the fact you are actually removing the card and inserting it into your computer each time anyway, so formatting using the computers software or SD formatter is a doddle.

I’d sort of understand a bit better if you always used internal memory. However, when using internal only across the M11M and M11P I’ve had very little issue with crashes anyway. Using SD cards and not cleaning afterwards seemed the precipitant for me.

My M11D has never crashed and nor has Mr Shutters as far as I know who started the ‘uproar’

My personal preference if they had any firmware redesign bandwidth is to change the ability to set the clock without a computer to change user profile or at least shutter type in camera first.

Yes having never used a M11 before this Internal Storage thing drove me a little nuts at first with the M11-D, but I now basically ignore it and that works just fine. I set the camera so that the files, (DNG only ), go to a 128gb SD card and any rare "overflow" goes to the Internal Storage. I could take a spare SD card with, but in reality I would never shoot enough on an outing to fill 128gbs and so far I've yet to see the value for me anyway to use the full 60mgp resolution choice, I'm bizarrely content with the 18mgp right now, I like the "look".

If away on a trip with the M11-D I'd simply take spare SD's, fill them to around 80% then switch out for an empty/pre-formatted card, down-loading them directly to the Mac when back at base, never bothering with Fotos which hopefully I will rarely use now I think the camera is set the way I want it. I dislike reliance on Fotos/'Phone/whatever..........

And yes, I do hope that Leica will do more, if it's possible, with this camera's firmware to allow more in-camera changes rather than having to do stuff through Fotos, we'll see if more enhancements will happen but having come from the M10-D and Leica's lack of developmental interest in it after it's launch I will not be holding my breath.

Simple unsnap the top snaps and the case comes off for access to battery compartment and SD card.

As for my complaints about the M11D, believe me my store manager agreed and gladly took it back since he also understood that short coming in his mind too.

I have a similar 'classic cameras' case with a clip on cover for the screen. Whilst it does cover the LCD it makes the camera significantly larger and thicker. Something I dislike. So I can see an argument for the D versions as being much nicer in the hand. For me it's not having a mono version that keeps me away. Wouldn't be bothered by the formatting issue.

I first got enticed into Leica world by the Edition 60, for which I have the original Luigi half case and also his custom ordered full case.  The M11D does not have buttons on the back and the case has a circular opening for the ISO dial.  It’s best to have an authentic D experience with an appropriate Luigi case too.  Although I find myself using Ms naked and will not order any new cases.  Otherwise they become thick as an M240.  You can use an M11D with an SD card and forget about the internal memory until Leica comes up with an appeasing way to format it in camera.

For me, the worry of how to format the internal memory of the M11-D was quickly replaced by the joy of using it.

👇

The reason for choosing the D was because I realized I'd completely moved to using the LCD on my M11M and had stopped using the rangefinder. I was getting exact photos I wanted. They were perfectly level. They were perfectly exposed. But the experience of taking the photos with an M camera was gone.

A case with a cover will not prevent me from using an LCD, I would just remove the cover.

I also am enjoying my first D version and have not used my M11P or M11M since the M11D came.  More so than I could have imagined.  For travel though, I still am going with the Q3.
