Well some say the 50 Elmar f/2.8 collapsable is very good and now they have the Summarit f/2.5 which those that have tested it say it is very good.

Or you can get the Summicron 50 f/2, another very good lens.

BUT if you want the MAC DADDY of all 50mm lenses then spring for the Summilux f/1.4.

Between new and good used, you have really lot of choices... and so the budgeting has to be considered in the evaluation. Generally speaking, SUMMICRON is a lens on which you cannot make a mistake, new if can afford, used (even not of the last version) if you prefer to spare a discrete amount; but the used MUST be good, i.e., better to look at it before acquiring, for 50s tipically have been much used. Summicrons are not rare... depending on your location, it's probable you can directly look at some item... alternatively, on the net there are very serious top dealers (Leicashop of Wien, one of the best, has always a good availabilty of various kind of Summicrons).

The current M-Elmar 50/2.8 is very good (and light in weight, the black one is only 170gm). Pre-ASPH Summilux 50/1.4 if you like the look from the 60's/70's, and if you want to look beyond Leica there is the Zeiss Planar 50/2.0 which deserves attention. Good luck in your shopping! :)

My combination: M6 with 3.5/50 Elmar (coated) - camera can't be smaller! M6 with V/C Nokton 1.5/50, because this lens has the best relation in price and quality in my opinion.

Good luck from Cologne/Germany, Leonard Liese

Looking for a 50mm for my M6. Mostly B & W min f 2.8 any suggestions ?...

Depends on your tastes essentially as there is no bad 50 at Leica. From my own stable i would choose:

- a Summilux 50/1.4 asph if you shoot a lot in low light and/or you want the sharpest and most contrasty 50 available;

- a late Summilux 50/1.4 pre-asph (with built-in hood) as the best of them all for portrait and for its lack of weakness in general photography IMHO;

- a Summicron 50/2 as the best affordable fast 50 available;

- a current Elmar 50/2.8 if you're after a compact lens and/or you like the Tessar look as much as i do;

- a vintage Elmar 50/2.8 for B&W if the current one is too contrasty for you.

Hi, It's a little hard to answer your query. There are all sorts of 50 mm lenses, many are good general purpose lenses, but some are outstanding for specific uses. The f/1 Noctilux, the f/1,4 Summilux, or even a f/1,8 Angénieux S1, or some of the older, single-coated or uncoated 50's could all be ideal for your use. You might wish to define a little bit more clearly in your own mind what it types of things you would like to shoot before looking for an answer to your question. Good-luck, and happy new year.
