Let me preface this with I'm a full time product designer for the past 20 years. Also a tinkerer who overthinks shit. Probably partially insane.
Β
SoΒ l'm going on a 2 week motorcycle camping trip through Patagonia. My Q3 43 is the only camera I'm bringing. And I'm not running my new Q3 43 without a filter. Or without a hood. Not happening.
Β
First, the 1.2mm thick eins Japan filter makes this whole thing possible. But it still requires more. So with 4 minor interior cuts to the hood with a mill end, I made it work. Figured worst case, only the hood would be sacrificed and absolutely zero damage to the camera (kept in another room).
Can always get another hood if it screwed up somehow.
Anyway.
Measure seven times. Cut once.
All that stuff.
Β
Zero visual difference from the exterior.
Zero effect to the structural integrity.
Β
Now it works like it was supposed to from Leica.

Hood, yes; protection filter, no, especially if you have the hood on.

Can you show us the inside, thanks.

I've got a Sherline desktop mill for doing similar hack mods.

Not for where I’m going and what I’m doing.Β

Sounds interesting. Unlike X100, one doesn’t need to add filter to make the camera weatherproof, though one may want to avoid salt, sand or color getting on the lens (or camera).

So even with the 1.2mm eins filter, you will still encounter problems in macro mode?

Exactly my thinking :)

I'd rather replace a filter versus sending off my Q3 for weeks to have the front lens element replaced.

That's the concept anyway haha.

This is great news!

Would you be happy to upload the video elsewhere that doesn’t require an account or group membership such as YouTube?

Failing that, a few photos of the inside of the hood would be great.Β

So basically this is proof of concept.Β  Leica could have slightly modified their hood and offered a thin filter like this instead of just saying, "go buy our other hood."Β Β

I thought the same thing!

The fact that it CAN indeed be done without harming anything whatsoever… dimensionally it’s all there… they totally could’ve done this from the factory.Β

So damn happy with it now!

I’m currently building a jig with another local product designer friend of mine… considering offering it as a service, so I might keep the backside hidden for now.

Just to clarify, this isn’t an ad, I really don’t want anyone to contact me about the service via this channel as I’m not setup to do this for anyone yet and want to follow all forum rules :)Β

The main reason I don’t necessarily want to publicly share a β€œhow to” is because there is a VERY good chance people will destroy their hoods very quickly if they don’t have extensive shop experience, have the wrong tools, or use the correct tools incorrectly.

But hey, maybe I’ll change my mind as I do legit want to help.Β

Thanks for this it gives me hopeΒ

do you think it would work on one of the cheaper Β β€˜Amazon’ hoods as a retired Toolmaker I’d like to give this a go ?

So I was definitely thinking about this option too. I wish I had my Q3 28mm at the same time as I had my Q3 43mm so I could do some test fitting with the 28 hood on the 43. Sadly, had to sell the 28 to afford the 43.

However, my friend who has both tried and told me over the phone it wouldn’t fit. No video or anything, but he said β€œit’s threaded different”. I’m guessing all the third party hoods currently available are made for the 28mm so based on my buddy’s feedback… they won’t fit. They’d also be a good bit longer than the 43 hood.

But, for the sake of experimenting, it might be worth grabbing one. Hell, if the third party square hood fits the threads, I suspect that no modifications would be necessary at all since there’s a decent amount of space in there! 🀞

Also, something like Otect Q-Cap does not fit Q3 43.

I’m guessing they reallllly wanted to make the lens+hood the exact same size as the 28 and did anything in their power to make it happen. Such a bummer none of these other accessories fit, but hey… hopefully the third party market will recognize this opportunity and fill the gap quickly!

According to @jonoslackΒ in another thread, the max filter thickness in macro mode can be 0.7mm, so a no-go without a fix.
