j. white Posted December 27, 2007 Share #2 Posted December 27, 2007 I'm going to visit NY this weekend. Here's my short list of things to be seen, eaten, and done... Well, the list of NYC Museums speaks for itself Fave Spots In Central Park (for shooting and simply being): - The Lagoon - The Poets Walk - Bethesda Fountain - The Ramble - Belvedere Castle & the Henry Luce Nature Observatory For Shooting: -Take a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and spend some time in Brooklyn Heights or make your way to Brooklyn's Dumbo district at the foot of the Manhattan Bridge. Manhattan never looks better - especially very early in the morning. - I love the Lower East Side, Chinatown, & Little Italy - Other than that - explore, explore, explore. Fave Food On The Cheap: - Mamoun's Falafel (Open till 5am! Washington Square & East Village) - Gray's Papaya (Hot Dogs in the West Village) - Elvie's (Authentic Phillipino food - East Village) Fave Food On The Not So Cheap: - Florent (A Nice Bistro in the Meat Packing District) - D' Umerto's (Old-School Italian in Chelsea) - Po (New -School Italian in the West Village) - Moustache (New-School Middle Eastern in the West Village) -j. rougewave Posted December 27, 2007 Share #4 Posted December 27, 2007 Wen, hit the streets, anywhere & everywhere. The action is outside. Mr, White is encyclopedic in his references, but there's always opportunities in the the street. I'd start at the bottom of the Island and work my way up. The Battery is very cool with vistas to bridges, Statue of Liberty. Take the Staten Island Ferry to Staten Island and then come right back. You will get the best view of NYC there is. It's like coming into Hong Kong from the water. All the narrow alleyways of lower Manhattan offer uniqiue views unavaiable anywhere on the planet. Check out Bernice Abbott's work to get a taste. From there, go north along Broadway to Bowling Green, The WTC site & then north again to West Broadway & wander. China town, Little Italy is East & North from there. Only a few blocks away. Go into as many liitle restaurants to get off your feet & take pictures of people from everywhere on the planet. Keep going north thru SOHO and reach the jewel of NYC, Greenwich Village. Here is eveything, you just have to look & wander. Get GOOD maps, including MTA subway maps on PDF's before you come & learn the subways before you need them. That will keep you on the go & in a more blissful state. STOP & TALK, ASK QUESTIONS. Residents love to instruct and give there opinion (witness this post). I often play tourist when I want to talk portraits. Good luck & feel free to make inquires.
wen Posted December 27, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted December 27, 2007 wow, that is great...looks like so many places to check it out it is safe to walk around NY city with MP, right
rafael_macia Posted December 28, 2007 Share #6 Posted December 28, 2007 wow, that is great...looks like so many places to check it out it is safe to walk around NY city with MP, right Realize, and respect that you are in a strange, new, city, away from home. In general crime is way, way, down, nothing like Hollywood shows it to be. But still; crime can be anywhere. "Don't tempt children", is a good way to think. Until you are relaxed, don't openly display your valuables. Appear confident. Thieves always tend to pick the weak, and timid. Easier for them. Keep your eyes open, stay alert, (carry a water gun with Clorox in it .... only kidding!) You should have a great time! Rafael
Michael Hiles Posted December 28, 2007 Share #7 Posted December 28, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ahh, New York. Go to Central Park - it is very big, and there are always shots of life unfolding. Museums - The Metropolitan is the U.S.'s best museum in my opinion. The collection is very rich. Also, consider the Cloisters. This is a subsidiary of the Met and it has medieval art. There is a fabulous ivory cross from Bury St Edmonds in England which is sublime. And the Museum of Modern Art is terrific - see the Picassos and Matisses. Eat the sausages from the street vendors. Time for me to shut up. Cheers, M. treeplanter Posted December 28, 2007 Share #8 Posted December 28, 2007 wow, that is great...it is safe to walk around NY city with MP, right I spent a day/night walking around NYC, last April with my MP, without anybody even noticing me. From Chinatown during the day to Times Square at night, I took several rolls of B&W and had a great time doing it. Enjoy your trip. Jim B.

LichMD Posted December 28, 2007 Share #10 Posted December 28, 2007 I routinely walk around with my M8 in hand, rarely drawing any notice from passerby. Of course I live here and therefore know where I'm going. I think looking comfortable, knowing the general direction of things and not appearing to be furtive is very important. You want to appear comfortable. Greenwich Village is a great place and full of movement and opportunities for great photos. But don't neglect other areas of the city, things happen north of 14th street too. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask questions once you get here. bobs Posted December 30, 2007 Share #11 Posted December 30, 2007 Wen NYC has everything you could wish for, I agree with the comments from Ben, just walk and look around. Yes, use the subway all the time, it is so much quicker than the Bus or Taxis, BUT, use the Bus and Taxis at night (my daughter's comment and she lives in NYC) The Brooklyn Bridge can consume a lot of film/SD cards. Take the Ferry trip aroiund the island (Manhatten) from the end of West 42 nd Street, as you go around on the water you will get a much better appreciation of NYC. The Museum is something to see, I have spent a total of 7 days looking through and still wish to go back again. The Egyptian exhibit is awesome (I hope you are interested in history) Central Park should be interesting but lacking a little colour as it will still be cold and lacking the colour of Spring. When you go to the WTC walk on down to the waterfront and then continue around the point and look at the Sailing ships, the masts and riggings leave wonderful vistas. I come from Melbourne, Australia and only get across to America as money permits but having soent some 10 weeks in NYC and upstate I love the place. And yes, I have been to Europe, UK ans South East Asia but I still rate NYC as up there with the best Regards Bob Showers
norbertnl Posted December 30, 2007 Share #12 Posted December 30, 2007 it is safe to walk around NY city with MP, right Friends from NYC once told me that "strength in numbers" is a wise principle to adhere to: avoid abandoned streets, especially at dark. One of my favourite things to do in NYC is hanging around at the Washington Square fountain when the weather is nice. And don't forget Coney Island. It can be very picturesque on cold and clear days in winter. Best, Norbert
masjah Posted December 30, 2007 Share #13 Posted December 30, 2007 On the Museums front, in addition to the Met, the Cloisters and MOMA, the Frick Collection is a gem, and don't forget the Guggenheim of course, though the latter is probably still under repair, so may not have absolutely everything open. Enjoy.

Artichoke Posted December 31, 2007 Share #15 Posted December 31, 2007 so much to see & do let me second someone's earlier recommendation about Florent ...I have been going there since it opened & it is a great NY bistro in a most curious setting ...they only take cash, but are open 24 hours ...a great place to visit very late at night another museum that is a favorite and has not yet been mentioned is the Morgan Library which was the center of action in the book/film Ragtime ...unfortunately they do not allow photography inside, but it is still a fine place for a visit & with the MP you may be able to sneak a few Union Square has a fine farmer's market and is near Tamarkin which is worth a visit as they have outstanding Leica used equipment have fun and keep alert ...NYC has less of an edge than it did 10 years ago, but it still is a town in which you should keep your eyes open and your wallet in a front pants pocket with your hand nearby
kdemas Posted January 4, 2008 Share #16 Posted January 4, 2008 It's always fun to hit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, touristy I know but great for a first time visit. There is a new "observation deck" atop the Rockefeller Center which is supposed to be nice, the view from atop the Empire State Building should be experienced once. Have fun at B&H, the place is huge. As for Museums the Moma is my favorite, the Met is incredible but requires a few days to see everything. Kent ps- One thing I have never done is the cruise around Manhatten by boat.
illuminatus Posted January 4, 2008 Share #17 Posted January 4, 2008 I went to NY several times with my shiny MP and lenses. There was no problem. There are too many tourists with cameras in NY, if it does any, will help you blend in with other tourists. I prefer the view from the Rockefeller Plaza. Unlike the Empire State, the line up is much shorter. It has a nice view of the Central Park. You can go up there in the evening for great night shots. Both MoMa and the Metropolitan Museum allow photographing their exhibits as long as no flash is used. I have taken a few interesting pictures at the Met. Norma's at Parker Meridien has interesting breakfast menu. It very close to the Central Park. If you heading to the Met or MoMa, it's a good place to start. SoHo has a few of my favorite restaurants. I like having breakfast and lunch at Balthazar.
doctorlol Posted January 6, 2008 Share #18 Posted January 6, 2008 NYC in Feb? First dress warmly! We spend one week each year in NYC, we live in London. Even afetr many years, there is a buzz from NYC, that no other city exudes. It is safe and remarkably clean. The subway is fine during the day. First tip is use a taxi from JFK to Manhattan, a fix fee of $45 is excellent. Hotels are soooo numerous that the only determining factor is cost. We are older and prefer the peace of Upper East Side. Look up Quikbook for good deals. Some site have heavy security and you must take this into account. Staue of Liberty and Ellis Island should be on your list. Top of the Rock is better that the Empire State Building, and has shorter lines. Museums should include the Met, MOMA and the eclectic Frick. Get a Zagat for dining, but for breakfast try Norma's and Viand at 61st and Madison. Jazz at the Bluenote and Birdland. Canal Street for 'knock-off' and B&H for anything photographic, but closed Saturdays. Even if you don't buy anything, the place is awsome. Enjoy! Then visit London.....
