I just looked at this more closely and noticed that the guy halfway down the bar with his hand on his chin is the spitting image of the character, Rip, in the TV series "Yellowstone."

If there is a “reasonable expectation of privacy” I decide that at the moment I make or not make the photograph. Just don't overtake when you're in doubt. And there's always a second chance to decide to publish or not. I don't see the difference between streets and taverns. If people have a secret affair, it's their responsibility to choose a safe meeting point. My ethics are much more directed agains shooting the "picturesque poverty": taking pictures of homeless people who sleep under the bridge who   aren't asked if they appreciate this. That's unethical for me.

And what about Martin Parr's work then? His work is in fact turning around the meaning/the narrative of harmless people who are just enjoying their day at the beach. Or Diane Arbus... Should that kind of work be forbidden by a new privacy law?

And there's another thing going the last decade: when people take pictures with an iPhone nobody cares but when you use a camera people's privacy is threatened

I understand. Best I don’t lead the thread further astray. Probably should have kept it to myself. Carry on, pubsters.

Not intending to be a killjoy, but just sharing a personal observation prompted by this thread. Looking at a lot of these pictures, it occurs to me that restaurants, taverns, and bars are locations where a “reasonable expectation of privacy” could often be assumed. And perhaps the decent thing to do is respect that expectation. I’ve taken these shots myself, but seeing them presented here makes me question the practice.

When I worked for a commuter rail agency, I photographed train interiors and passengers for social and marketing platforms. Our attorneys looked deeply into the whole "expectation of privacy" issue and they concluded that in public spaces there is no right to privacy. I believe this can be extended to public spaces like streets and pubs.

Now, I also believe that photographers who shoot in public spaces should not be jerks and respect individual requests. If someone says "please don't photograph me," I don't.

Based on the expressions on the faces of the people in the pub I frequent, I'd say they are generally into it.

The exception to this, for me, is I do not photograph homeless or disadvantaged people. The homeless generally do not have the ability to leave public spaces.
