Not intending to be a killjoy, but just sharing a personal observation prompted by this thread. Looking at a lot of these pictures, it occurs to me that restaurants, taverns, and bars are locations where a “reasonable expectation of privacy” could often be assumed. And perhaps the decent thing to do is respect that expectation. I’ve taken these shots myself, but seeing them presented here makes me question the practice.

If there is a “reasonable expectation of privacy” I decide that at the moment I make or not make the photograph. Just don't overtake when you're in doubt. And there's always a second chance to decide to publish or not. I don't see the difference between streets and taverns. If people have a secret affair, it's their responsibility to choose a safe meeting point. My ethics are much more directed agains shooting the "picturesque poverty": taking pictures of homeless people who sleep under the bridge who   aren't asked if they appreciate this. That's unethical for me.

And what about Martin Parr's work then? His work is in fact turning around the meaning/the narrative of harmless people who are just enjoying their day at the beach. Or Diane Arbus... Should that kind of work be forbidden by a new privacy law?

And there's another thing going the last decade: when people take pictures with an iPhone nobody cares but when you use a camera people's privacy is threatened

Cheating a bit. These are actors, but posing for publicity shots for a play. This is in a real, co-operating pub.
