40mm on M bodies

I occasionally use a Minolta 40mm lens on an M6. This puts up the 50mm framelines but occasionally both 50mm and 35mm lines, the latter slightly dimmer than when used with a 35mm lens. Will this useage cause any damage to the automatic frame line indicators in the camera?

I'm not too sure about the M6 but i do know on the M3 the frame lines positioning can be adjusted after removing the top cover plate and adjusting the frame masking shaft,so i presume the same can be done on your M6.

The frame lines are set by a cam on the lens that engages with the frame masking shaft on the lens bayonet housing .

Each lens size ,5cm 9cm 13.5cm etc positions this cam accordingly.

Yours would appear to be between frames and has no bearing whatsoever on the workings of the camera, although subject framing in the finder might be slightly out.

I think there is no risk at all...as the prevoius post said, frames are activated by cam on the lens mount... nothing strange that your 40 is not perfect in this respect on M6: it wasn't an "officially supported lens" on Leica M bodies. You can observe the same "double-uneven" framing acting manually on the frame selection lever, in intermediate positions (or at least, I can see this on my M4), and it has no damaging effect.

The M-Rokkor 40/2 brings up automatically 50mm framelines with every M camera AFAIK.

Are you sure you turn your lens far enough to the right when you mount it on the body?

You should hear a clic then and the 35mm framelines won't be visible any more.

Edit: Otherwise perhaps the flange of your lens has been filed to bring up the 35mm framelines?

Would be easy to check if you can show the flange here.

Thanks Noel, Luigi, Ict and Edit. I use an M4-P as well as an M6 and I thought the problem would apply equally to both so only mentioned the M6 (if that makes sense). As it happens, the 50/75mm frames click positively into place in the M6. It is on the M4-P that the camera shows indecision between 35mm and 50mm frames; probably because of old age although I have recently had it serviced. I just give the frame lever a little shove and the 35mm frames go away.

Does your M4-P behave the same way with 50mm lenses?

If so it needs some more service i'm afraid as my earlier M4-2 has no framelines issues with the Rokkor.
