Hi,

Can anyone advise if the thick white line on the right of these images is an indication that the curtain/s are faulty?

The camera has the original Leica seal so a CLA will be a last resort.

Thank you.

The original L seal can be removed and replaced for the purpose of a CLA. It’s a wax plug. Careful removal with a dental pick or similar will not damage it, such that it can easily be replaced. I have an M2 with original seal … and a CLA.

This is the opposite to 'capping' where the second curtain goes faster than the first. This gives a black band in an area of no or little exposure.  In this case the second shutter is going slower leading to over exposure in a band which may be called 'tapering'.

As for the 'L' seal this is part of Leica mythology which just means that no-one has serviced the camera for many years. Ask the repair person you use to do what they can to preserve this. It would never be a matter that would concern me and I own many vintage Leicas. In fact it is many years since I have seen any mention of an 'L' seal.

As you are in the UK, I would recommend Alan Starkie of Cameraworks https://www.cameraworks-uk.com/about-us . Going to DAG in the US would only lead to endless hassle with tax authorities and postage etc.

Yes, I hadn’t noticed this. DAG is more appropriate for US photographers.
