stvn66 Posted September 4, 2024 Share #1 Posted September 4, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, Can anyone advise if the thick white line on the right of these images is an indication that the curtain/s are faulty? The camera has the original Leica seal so a CLA will be a last resort. Thank you. Welcome, dear visitor! Borna Posted September 4, 2024 Share #3 Posted September 4, 2024 Hi! A CLA will fix that for you. Perhaps if the camera has the original seal, it is anyway time for new oils, adjustments etc. Don't think there is anything wrong with the curtain, probably just needs some tweaking within the CLA.
Mute-on Posted September 4, 2024 Share #4 Posted September 4, 2024 The original L seal can be removed and replaced for the purpose of a CLA. It’s a wax plug. Careful removal with a dental pick or similar will not damage it, such that it can easily be replaced. I have an M2 with original seal … and a CLA.
AceVentura1986 Posted September 4, 2024 Share #5 Posted September 4, 2024 CLA. Send it to DAG. You’ll get it back in 3-6 weeks good as new.

This is the opposite to 'capping' where the second curtain goes faster than the first. This gives a black band in an area of no or little exposure. In this case the second shutter is going slower leading to over exposure in a band which may be called 'tapering'. As for the 'L' seal this is part of Leica mythology which just means that no-one has serviced the camera for many years. Ask the repair person you use to do what they can to preserve this. It would never be a matter that would concern me and I own many vintage Leicas. In fact it is many years since I have seen any mention of an 'L' seal. As you are in the UK, I would recommend Alan Starkie of Cameraworks https://www.cameraworks-uk.com/about-us . Going to DAG in the US would only lead to endless hassle with tax authorities and postage etc. William Edited September 4, 2024 by willeica 2

nitroplait Posted September 5, 2024 Share #9 Posted September 5, 2024 The L seal is only relevant if the camera never had been touched by anything but virgin hands. 1
