Age 71. I have just shot a sharp image at 0.3s from a not very stable stance. This is not luck. Either your cameras or your technique are at fault.

Le Chef Posted September 16, 2024 Share #284 Posted September 16, 2024 We have a number of mature posters who shoot low shutter speeds with longer 300mm + lenses without any form of stability. I do think the usefulness of OIS at extreme shutter speeds is misunderstood. I don't see any OIS I know of tat claimed to be sharp at 5 stops down from 15th! old soul it!chool theory suggests you shoot a 28mm and a min of 1/42nd so pull that 5 stops and you get 1/2 sec sharp? Find me any camera whose OIS lets you shot at a half a second? On a telephoto lens where the limits are much higher image stabilization is much more effective! try shooting a 300mm lens handheld a1/30th for instance with I found the Q2 IOS worked amazingly well compared to my M11 with a28mm on it. Some days I wish someone would make an M lens with IOS built in!
Nathant123 Posted September 17, 2024 Share #287 Posted September 17, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anyone think there is any truth to the rumour that it’s using the Q2 sensor and not the Q3? I thought it was quite bizarre when I read a new variant of the Q3 would use the older sensor. Perhaps we don’t have have to wait too much longer to find out.. You a right. but with the slow shutter stable ability comes one thing to my mind. it stabilizes me and everything around me can go ballistic. I like this look a lot. usually I need a tripod to achieve this , but with the camera helping me I can do it in many Szenarios. And it’s like a portal into a world we cannot see. so that’s the main reason why I like to have this feature . And if you shoot people it helps a lot to get a blurred but sharp image. cheers

Your remark has me thinking– was buying the Q3 "sensible"? The only answer I have is that I liked it, and have no regrets. Now with M11-D out, I think in terms of what you said. And the best answer I have is that if you wanted an analogue, then M6 analogue with a bit of electronics may make more sense. And if you wanted digital then M11-P may make more sense. But it seems that those who like Leica like what they are getting into with M11-D. Seems to me that buying Leica cameras in general is not because the buyer is approaching the matter in terms of value for features, but because s/he just wants to buy Leica. And having got that basic decision out of the way, the features and shortcomings may be considered. I am missing something here?

If it was 47MP but a new BSI sensor then I'd still be interested. But if it's the old Q2 sensor then it would be a no for me. I photograph a fair bit in the evening so a BSI sensor would be what I'd need. No tripods for me, I want to be quick and not obvious. It would seem odd though to not use the same sensor as the Q3.

Carrot Posted September 17, 2024 Share #293 Posted September 17, 2024 If the Q-P followed the Q-116, then maybe the Q2-43 is the Q2-P? Using up older and cheaper components to test the reaction to a 43mm lens, rather than diving straight in with a Q3-43?
wlaidlaw Posted September 17, 2024 Share #294 Posted September 17, 2024 I have quite serious essential arthritic tremor, which got a lot worse after I had a fairly serious encounter with Covid, which left me with long Covid. I find the OIS on the Q3 works very well enabling shots for example, inside a poorly lit church at low shutter speeds, without going to very high and noisy ISO levels. I might then tidy up the image with Topaz Sharpen AI, depending on how big I am going to print it. I rarely use below 1/60 on my M10-R or various film cameras without OIS or IBIS unless on a tripod, whereas I am happy to go to 1/15 on the Q3. I think the idea that the new Q camera would revert to the Q2 sensor is BS. Wilson

I was responding to your musing whether using a 47 MP sensor and not a 60 MP sensor made any sense. What I tried to convey is my sense, that it is perhaps tricky to look for and establish rationality, strictly in terms of camera specs, in Leica's thinking behind its decisions I do hope that clarifies matters. I think in the case of the M11-D, it is more a way of taking a photograph that is akin to a film camera. No screen to distract you from watching and waiting for the moment. Features wise, the same generation of sensor etc as the M11-P. But I think if the rumoured Q3 43mm f/2 APO uses the old Q2 sensor then the equation becomes un balanced, especially if the price ends up equal to the current Q3 or higher. For me, no matter how much I like Leica cameras, I wouldn't be able to go for that.

The low light performance of the Q3 sensor is much better and the way it renders noise is much smoother and cleaner. Where did you read that it was going to be a Q2 sensor?
