I was to say the least originally very disappointed with the IQ .. I tried Pany, TTArtisans & Leica lenses.. I reset my menus and set the camera to S shot, Fine +1 on the sub menu (left NR at 0).. Images are markedly improved… With a little tweaking the images are now very good, not quite in the Leica body/lens IQ, but nonetheless very usable. 🍷

S5 or S5ii?  The S5ii is a marked improvement. The IQ is comparable to the SL and SL2S IMO

S5, I wanted another body as I have quite a few rarely used Leica lenses.. Now I’ve tweaked it to my ‘view’ I’m quite happy.. One thing for sure, it ain’t a Leica.. 😉

Well, the upgraded version is a lot closer.

I assume the S5II is an improved S5, but as far or as close to Leica as the S5. What has changed that makes is closer to Leica?

The sensor, the AF, the IBIS, the EVF, the colour output, just to name the main ones. AF and IBIS outperform Leica by a fair margin (Also the SL3, BTW). The sensor is equivalent to the SL2S in IQ. EVF still slightly behind, but far better than the S5. If you are into video, the S5iiX is miles ahead, industry standard really. Build quality and solidity - I see no difference between Leica and Panasonic. User UI -that is subjective and YMMV,, but the Panasonic is preferable for old analogue shooters like me - far less menus, no double or long presses, the camera can be controlled without taking it from your eye. And no, it ain't a Leica - but then, a Leica ain't a Panasonic. (nor a Nikon, or a Sony, or a Canon...)

I disagree about the IQ, the S5II(X) is not better than the S5 or the S1 at all. I have the 3 cameras (as well as most Panasonic G/GH cameras) and the S5II has worse IQ in video. The details rendering is really not the same, the standard profiles are full of sharpening and chroma noise reduction. In 4K theses profiles are just inusable, the image lacks details and some parts of the image looks overly sharpened. V-log is better because it uses much less sharpening and details filtering, but still not as good as the S5 or S1.
The AF and IBIS are improved yes, but at the cost of image quality. About the colors, they are different, some prefers the colors of the S5II, some the S5 or S1, but I still prefer my S1 colors, it has better contrast and vivid colors while making skin tones very natural. My S5II files looks slightly more saturated but not as natural.

You may disagree but the I have both S5 and S5ii and the quality jump is obvious. Especially the acuity of the details is better, especially at higher ISO. I fail to see what the AF and IBIS can possibly have to do with the rendering of the sensor. When you start talking about standard profiles you are talking about the postprocessing which has absolutely nothing to do with the raw output of the sensor. I would never judge a camera that way. You should have an individual profile in your raw converter. The embedded one of the S5 was, well,  dodgy.  But as said that is all software.

I speak about video ...

@jaapv @oculaii The video quality of the S5 II and S5 II X is a topic of some controversy. Compared with the first generation of S cameras including the S1, S1H and S5, the S5 II/X apparently creates video files with extra sharpening but weirdly less detail. This seems to be especially pronounced when using colour profiles like Standard, Natural, Vivid etc, but not so much with v-log. I have shot projects with the S5 that have been placed with broadcast/streaming platforms, and the broadcasters have no issue with the image quality; the anecdotal reports by those who own/use both generations of cameras give me pause about upgrading to the most recent S5 models.

On the plus side, Prores Raw and Blackmagic Braw implementation on the S5 II/X is much better than the S5 and S1H, almost on par with native braw cameras like the Blackmagic Pocket 6K.

What does interest me about the S5 II is the improved autofocus, as sports is my primary work. I can get by with the S5, but it could be better.
