The 43mm Ali express filter is currently out of stock, so for a test, I bought a cheap filter from Amazon which measured 3.5mm and reduced the thickness to just over 2mm in my lathe (I protected the glass with a disc of cling film) I dipped the exposed metal in a circle of black paint and it does the job (l appreciate not every one has access to a lathe…)

Great job , wow a lot of work , and much more effort to place a filter on a well designed camera in 2025.

I agree, but having bought the Leica lens cap at the same time as the camera and as I have a lathe, it was a simple solution (at least for me😊)

So a commentor named Tom replied to this thread, but not one seemed to take much notice. He mentioned a NiSi filter for the D-Lux8. Anyway, I saw his comment while I was researching this question and, having some positive past experience with NiSi, I was inspired to look into it. I ended up finding the NiSi filter on an Austrian NiSi site. At the time, NiSi USA didn't carry the filter. I reached out to them about it and it turned out that they weren't aware that it existed. Anyway, fast forward a couple of months and they've added it to their collection. The inventory still seems to be limited/on backorder, but I was finally able to get my hands on one today. And I am happy to report that the NiSi D-Lux8 filter fits perfectly under the Leica Auto Opening Lens Cap. It's about $90 USD retail, but NiSi does have sales periodically, and besides, that shouldn't phase anyone paying Leica prices for their camera accessories. So, thanks Tom, for pointing this out. And congrats to everyone searching, we finally have a viable option again.

I am still unsure what the UV filter is supposed to do.

It may not be able to prevent dust from entering the lens. This will most likely happen in the telescopic part of the lens.

To protect the lens from scratching during transport it may not add much when you have the automatic cap in place (which I love).

The only thing I can think of is sand storm on the beach or salt water again in stormy conditions on the beach. But this is something I probably don't use this camera for as it is not weather sealed.

Am I missing something?

I bought mine at the Leica Store in Heidelberg, Germany.

The UV Filter helps me to keep dirt from the lens front element, like you mention salt water, fingerprints etc. So if its dirty I feel more comfi cleaning a filter which I could replace one day than cleaning the front element. I dont think a filter can help any lens from collecting dust.

I currently use the Auto Lens Cap, but I am thinking of the UV Filter for additional protection. Is there a difference in image quality when it comes to UV filters? In other words, is the Leica UV Filter really worth spending ca. 150€, while I can get cheaper ones around 30-40€?

There are definitely differences in the light transmission characteristics of different brands and models of UV filters. A relatively new American company called Breakthrough Photography has two lines of UV filters, called X2 UV and X4 UV Here is the specifications page for the UV4 line:

The forefront of nano coatings

The company is working on a line of magnetic filters. I first learned about Breakthrough Photography on the website of Leica Store Miami, who package even books with great care.

I purchased the “NiSi NC UV Filter for Leica D-Lux8”.

This filter was specifically designed for the D-Lux8 and works perfectly with the auto lens cap.  I am absolutely satisfied with its fit and quality.

The UV filter costs $89 and is worth every penny … combined with auto lens cap, the lens is protected and the design of the  auto lens cap is preserved.
