Hi all,

I received my d-lux 8 this week and I'm enjoying it.

just a quick question, I'm on version 1.0 that arrived from the store.

My lens zoom is between 24mm and 105mm. I assume the zoom between the 75mm eq and the 105mm is digital.

There is no option in the menu to disable it.

I have not seen any reviews of it and no mention of it in the manual.

Is there one out there that was able to disable it?

thank you

Digital zoom in previous DL’s produces a horrible result, and since this is the same sensor you will likely get the same result. I would switch it off as fast as you can.

Digital Zoom is software-based. The sensor should not make a difference. I do not know whether digital zoom quality has improved, but I would avoid it and instead use post-processors to crop and upscale.

Most of the Panaleica-Leicas have an iZoom function, just available in jpeg mode.  I assume it's in the Dlux8 as well.  I know it was in my older Panaleica, Dlux5, Dlux109, Vlux 4, Vlux114), and is in my Vlux5.  Unlike digital zoom, which just throws away the pixels at the four sides of the sensor, it uses an algorithm that provides virtually lossless increase at the long end of the zoom lens, doubling it's effective focal length. An additional advantage is you see the iZoomed image in the viewfinder.  Try it in the highest jpeg setting.

I've a dumb question regarding the zoom on the D Luxe 8...........I like pretty much all that I have read regarding the new 8 and I am sort of looking for a more portable / pocket-able walk-around camera, hence the interest in this one, but I do tend to dislike lenses that power-extend out of cameras so as perhaps 75% of the time I would stay at the wide end of any zoom I'd like to know whether on the D Luxe 8 if when the camera is turned on is the lens fully extended for widest setting of the zoom or is it in closer to the body?

I think I know the answer but it would be good to know for sure as it's not something I can check out in person at a camera store easily in my neck of the woods.........I do wish though that Leica had made this camera to accept interchangeable MFT lenses but that of course wouldn't ever had happened seeing that I think they don't make any themselves. At least I've a good alternative back-up with a Panasonic GX8, ( that does have interchangeable lenses ).

On power up the lens is unzoomed & at its widest
