reynoldsyoung Posted July 25, 2024 Share #1 Posted July 25, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Owning both, I am forever having to decide which is going with me. Do I simply need to make a decision for the long haul and not daily? The Q2M is winning regularly. Thinking B&W is just more fun!!

JaeR Posted July 25, 2024 Share #4 Posted July 25, 2024 I found myself in a similar situation when I borrowed a friend's Q2M to test drive alongside my Q3. I was looking for reasons to switch to the Q2M over the Q3, but the only significant advantage seemed to be the ISO quality. With Lightroom, I can nearly replicate the Q2M's black and white output on my Q3, while retaining the flexibility to switch between color and black & white. There is a lot to be said and love about a true B&W camera, most fine arts photography is shot in B&W. Keep the one you are likely to carry and use the most. hedleyw Posted July 25, 2024 Share #5 Posted July 25, 2024 For me the ISO quality advantage was lost as soon as I added orange or red filters, decided I may as well have the colour sensor with the flexibility to use software colour “filters” in the conversion to black and white.

Reynolds I'm in the same situation, but I haven't been able to get myself to part with the Q3. Part of the reason is that I like being able to use Denoise in Lightroom and DeepPRIME in DxO. I'll be interested to hear if you end up regretting not having the Q3.

I’d forgotten that as another reason I moved away from monochrome sensors. Did it twice, Q and M. Slow learner.
fordfanjpn Posted August 10, 2024 Share #12 Posted August 10, 2024 I'm still struggling with the idea of selling my Q3 and keeping just the Q2M. The Q3 is an amazing camera, and I love the image quality from that 60MP sensor. But I find that when I shoot with the Q3, I end up converting most of the images to B&W. It's a tough decision, but it's not getting much use, and I hate having that much money tied up in a camera that I'm not using on a regular basis. Has anyone else been through this and made a decision they're happy with?
reynoldsyoung Posted August 10, 2024 Author Share #13 Posted August 10, 2024 Completely understand ! My Q3 is in its final stages of sales on eBay. I love it too but the Q2M is the "go to" for me as will the Q3M when it arrives!! Reynolds

The Q2M and the M10M will now be my main shooters, although I still have all of my Fuji cameras if I should get the urge to shoot in color. Good luck with your eBay sale.

Reynolds Q3 is on its way to Michigan in the morning. I don't have to tell you that I anxiously await the Q3M if it ever comes. But for now, committed to Q2M, Capture One's handling of its monochrom DNG with some Efex Pro for good measure. Happy Camper!

Exactly what I ended up doing and haven’t regretted it a bit. On the way out the door with no particular subject in mind, it’s the Q2M and if I headed out specifically to shoot something like a sound check of a jazz group for a club or other venue (great, close access) the gear is the Q2M and an M10M with 75mm Summarit, along with a 21.

Interesting point. I haven’t noticed any loss in ISO quality when using an orange filter, but to be honest I haven’t been looking. Just how good is the dynamic range on the Q3? I get great B&W conversions using my Sony A7R3 but these almost always need to be in great lighting situations, in low light, not quite as convincing as my Q2M. I would consider the Q3 with the new rumored 43mm lens if the dynamic range is close enough to the Q2M. Any thoughts?

Umm - the monochrome sensor has an 1.5 stop ISO advantage because there is no (colour) Bayer filter in the light path. In other words: a colour camera has a permanent colour filter in front of it and a monochrome camera a removable one in front of the lens. So this is a non-argument. Besides, simulating colour filters in postprocessing will lead to increased noise due to the suppression of one or two colour channels, creating a similar quality loss as a physical filter. Thus you will lose the advantage of the monochrome sensor through the Bayer filter and add the postprocessing one, making for a double ISO loss. The only advantages of simulated colour filters are the ability to paint them in locally and vary colour and intensity.
