I liked the M2. The large magnification of the view-finder.

So an option to buy a version like that would be nice. 35/50/90. All I’ld need.

And for haptics - a faux-winder. Not to mimic a film camera, just for stability. (I liked the idea of being able to push it in or extend it slightly). The ‘thumbrests’ offer less in that respect. For the rest the 11d is on my list of very interesting.

I am inclined to skip the 12 and 13D and see what the 14D is like.

14D will be for the immortals with membership in Robotaxi in good standing (for traveling to photoshoots, charging, uploading and printing on a large format printer in the trunk).  It will come with an Ozempic dispenser as well, since Ozempic will have been proven to provide the required immortality.

If the M12-D is truly to be a reduction to the essentials (in the spirit of the M Edition 60), then what is needed?

  • manual focus - it’s on the lens
  • aperture - it’s also on the lens
  • shutter speed - no issue with the dial
  • shutter release - I like to have the option of remote release, so either threaded or using Fotos
  • ISO - is it really needed?  With sensor improvements, why not the default of Auto within a very limited range, with the option of base ISO, set in Fotos and forgotten
  • white balance - Auto, or alternative set in Fotos (to please @jonoslack) and forgotten
  • storage and download - internal storage (do away with SD cards)
  • battery - big USB-C charging

I like the option of the Visoflex - for those that don’t want it, don’t buy one and the little cover stays on permanently.

Optical rangefinder?  Of course!  Info in the view finder?  Like the M10-D, with (briefly) battery charge, internal memory space, the >>.<< for exposure and that’s it.

Meter?  Centre weighted off the shutter (no electronic shutter or live sensor, unless using the EVF - in which case, metering options set in Fotos, like the M10-D).  EV Compensation?  Set in Fotos and forget.

Collar around the shutter release for S, C & WiFi and with the thumb rest/faux winder.

The only controls on the camera body would then be the shutter dial, the shutter release and the lens release. Nothing else.  USB-C connection under a little cover on the side.

Based on your firm information, I have placed a pre-order. No delivery date given as yet.

No auto anything, esp no auto (A) on the shutter speed dial. No EVF nonsense. Give us a true MP (D).

Yes that would be good, no Fotos required too, that'll be great!..........With less electronics and so on it would be cheaper to manufacture too which would allow Leica to be able to sell it at a premium over the pricing of the "regular" Auto Everything Digital M.D.

Isn't that how it works? Less is More €€€€?

You lot are absolutely bonkers about deleting everything🤣! Do you have no will power? It's fine restricting abilities like not using A for yourselves but why force it on others when you can just not use it yourself? How to turn what is already a niche of a niche into a tool that will appeal to, and work for 10 people! I find myself agreeing with HDMESA.

Personally I like the look of the camera and the fact that absence of screen really helps concentration but making it much less practical for candid portraiture, street, etc and needing a handheld light meter seems an odd aim. While I appreciate Fox Talbot and Julia Cameron took photographs without auto exposure, metering and adjustable ISO that doesn't mean that I want to return to the days where sitters had to keep still for half an eternity to be able to deliver a portrait😂

Is there a demographics issue at play here? We've just designed a £8,000 box brownie with an M mount!

And the cine version would be Leica comes to your house and puts a hole in your window blind so you can see the activity on the street outside projected upside down on the wall next to you.

Because I hate when scrolling the shutter speed dial and accidentally end up on A thinking I was at 1/4000th. It's why many people prefer the standard M6 over the TTL M6. Never said anything about losing the meter altogether (though off the shutter blade I prefer). And if you think losing Auto this and that is taking us back to the days of Fox Talbot, Henri Cartier-Bresson has got a word or two from beyond the grave about that....

I actually think it is a demographics issue, in that Leica have pretty much designed a camera for wealthy retirees that want to see every Canon/Nikon/Sony whizz bang feature that supposedly helps them make better photos (though generally doesn't) instead of keeping true to the minimalist ethos of the M, that all one ever really needs, and has been the foundation of every photograph ever made: viewfinder aperture, shutter, and film speed.

Hey, if by cramming less into it and there being less that could go wrong, I think many of us might pay a premium if Leica can guarantee the camera won't be spending six month holidays in Wetzlar! 😅

Here's how I would design a D model. And yes, I do just ignore all of that other stuff when working with my digital M's, but hey, if we're going to buy into a purist fantasy, let's truly buy in!

Near instant start and wake up times to begin with.

No EVF/Wifi fluttery, back to M10 basics but beefed up CPU, power, buffer etc. No auto exposure modes (okay, certainly not a deal breaker).

Use that big beautiful back for three indented, discreet function buttons down the right side that display, in the optical viewfinder where the shutter speed displays, when scrolled, basics such as WB (in kelvins), Standby time, motor drive speed. Perhaps sensor cleaning activation, flash, date/time. Function buttons that actually function for something.

ISO dial on the back.

Formatting and sensor cleaning a matter of pushes on function buttons. Lens detection is a sticky point.

Some minor changes they should/could have made ages ago would be appreciated, such as the ability to also see the shutter speed chosen while in manual mode along with the letter indicators. Could be toggled on off by, again, those function buttons.

Brass body and removable baseplate is my preference, but could live with either. Robust as possible everything. Black paint edition available from day one. And a Monochrome version! Also from day one. Call it the MP-DM 😄

The wind on the lever of the M10-D could be cool (I've never had the fortune of trying one) IF one couldn't take another photo until ratcheted forward, like a film M. One minute time out every 36 frames. Optional 2fps MotorDrive or Leicavit available, of course. 🤣
