Manual focus option disappears from menu when I mount Panasonic 50 f 1.8 lens

Recommended Posts

There is a "focus" option button, at the right of the viewfinder of a Panasonic camera  ( S1  -  S1R  -  S5  -  S5 II )

S   -   C   -   MF            MF is manual focus

…and if you are on a Leica SL-body, you can move the focus to the back-button/joystick:

Except I have a Leica SL2.

Or use the switch on the lens.

Yes the other option by this lens switch itself,  to "override" the camera switch "AF setting"  (S or C)  of a "Panasonic" camera.
I have no experience in using a  Leica SL2  camera.  (Didn't expect that a "Leica" user should buy an entry level "Panasonic lens").

But would expect to do the same when using the switch on the lens itself when mounting the lens on a Leica SL2  camera?
If not, I wonder if the lens is making good electronic contact to the Leica SL2 body?
At least I should expect that official  L-mount alliance  branded lenses and camera's can be mixed between themselves for usage.

When I got the SL3 I had the same problem on a sigma lens. The AF/MF on the lens was the culprit. I don’t think my SL2 cared what buttons were selected on my Sigma and Panasonic lenses.
I just picked up the same 50mm f1.8 and it’s functioning fine.

I think it is a general thing - if the lens has an AF/MF switch on it, the option is disabled in the camera. I am not sure whether this is because it wouldn't work anyway. I noticed it with some Sigma lenses that have a switch - whereas Leica lenses (the ones I have seen anyway) do not have a switch so you have to do it from the body.

It is a bit of a pain because it means you have to set tings up a bit differently if you have a mix of lenses.

Correct, no switches on Leica SL lenses.

Lumix S Pro 50mm Lux has a special AF/MF ‘switch’, that I like: When the focus ring is in the frontal position, the lens is in AF-mode. If you push the focus ring slightly backward, you have a MF lens (with distance markings on the barrel). Since the left hand typically holds the lens near the front, it takes ‘no’ time to switch from AF to MF. I don’t know the robustness of such a sliding focus ring, but smart it is.

It’s the same mechanism on the Pana 70-200

With the lenses that have an af/mf switch (rather than a clutch) you don’t have to live with it. Set the lens to MF and now you can select MF on the SL2 (and use back button focus). Set it to AF and you can now select Af-s and Af-c.

*at least it works this way with the Sigma MF switch lenses, let me know if not the case with Panasonic

But I have a Leica SL2. This is the problem.

On Panasonic and Sigma lenses, you use the switch on the lens.
