Like many others here, I placed a pre-order with my dealer who noted that they have no idea when Leica will begin shipping the camera.  (As usual, eh?). I have also read a report stating that the entire first production run has already been sold-out.  No idea if this is true.

What perspective have you gotten on when the camera will actually begin landing in our hot hands?

PetaPixel's report that the D-Lux 8 is sold out is wrong. Some dealers use "Sold out" or "Backordered" even though they never received the first shipment.

I am surprised the demand. I feel it’s insane to pay about $1600 for such a not so big sensor P&S!

But, when I realized even a Ricoh GR III costs about $1100. I shut up.

At the Leica store in Amsterdam they told me two weeks ago that they had more than 60 orders. But they did not expect to get that many from Leica. Perhaps the amount of orders increased even more with the news around it.

It seems like almost every new camera now is overpriced and unavailable. It's the new trend we are expected to put up with as being normal.

I’m lucky enough to be getting my D-Lux 8 this morning via UPS. After seeing the stock state change on the Leica store web site on Tuesday I hit the button and grabbed one. When I called the two London camera stores to cancel my pre-orders, one said they had only been allocated 1 unit in total to cover all their stores. I wonder what the total number of cameras shipped was?

Very good point. I think they are taking the advantage of smaller cameras. So which one to get, Dlux 8 or the Ricoh Griii ?

Of course I'd take Dlux 8: high Q zoom. Taking this camera is for convenience. I have M when I need prime.

People rate portability and prime might want GRIII.

As always: it depends.

I ignored the Ricohs a long time and ended up using two of them while on holidays in the Netherlands in April this year a GR III and a GR IIIx HDF. I really love the ability to customize the camera, the menus and the RAWs are phantastic.

I ultimately sold them because I can‘t live without an EVF. And that is the reason why I really love the release of the D-Lux 8.

My very personal top 3 compact camera ranking would be

1st place Leica D-Lux 8
2nd place Ricoh GR IIIx (would be #1 if it had an EVF)
3rd place Fuji X100V/VI

Of course, the Leica Q3 is not a compact camera in the sense of this ranking… 😉

I really want to love Qx, but I just can’t manage the situations with a fixed 28mm lens. It probably takes a long way to get there. 
24-90mm  is ideal for me, but 24-75mm would be good enough, even 28-70mm (XV). 
 

Qx + Dlux 8 could be close to an ideal combo,… or compromise.

Are forum members thinking of the D-Lux 8 as a replacement or companion to a Q/Q2/Q3, especially if the Q is itself a companion to a M-series camera? I have a Q2 and a M11 and have the usual GAS for a D-Lux 8 and I struggle to decide whether to take the Q2 or M11 when going out for the day. I’m sorely tempted to trade the Q2 in for a 28mm lens for the M11 and a D-Lux 8.

If  I were you, I will sell the Q2 and get the 28mm + DLux 8.

I see M as the companion of Q, not the other way around. In this position, I think the question would be Q+M or Q+D8.

I have a Q3, a CL with a bunch of lenses, and an aging DL-109. I like using all of them but there is sufficient overlap that each of them can make the other camera redundant. If Leica had introduced a CL2, I probably wouldn’t have bought the Q3. But now I have it, it’s the no brainer choice.

The DL-109 is also a no brainer with the caveats of lack of weather resistance, and low light performance. It really needs to be serviced to get rid of dust in the zoom mechanism but that’s about $600 or so to do that. A DL-8 would be nice, but I will probably keep the 109 until it collapses.

Nothing except the few that have reported snarfing one hear. I’m on several lists, but am not putting full payment down that the megastores require (depending upon payment method and/or location). In the past, I’ve found that places like BH were less likely to have Leica inventory than others. Might be different with a lower priced compact platform.

The whole thing is policed. Manufacturers looks at “vertical” sales by retailer for the brand and “horizontal“ sales across all retailers by model, before making allocations for a new model.

The initial demand is never going to be satisfied, so buyers place multiple orders which makes things worse for a while. As always feeding frenzy only benefits speculators. Speculators drop out and the market returns to normal.

Work with your local dealer and they will treat you right, because they want you to come back. The big guys rely on churn not loyalty.

Not too long ago, I enjoyed the luxury of access to Leica Stores all over the world. Something that I never took for granted. Now my closest “local” Leica dealer is over 700nm distant. So wait I will, enjoying watching the early users having fun wringing out their cameras.

Leica Mayfair won't have any cameras to sell for another two weeks according to the sales lady yesterday.  I want the D-Lux as a companion to my M10 primarily for its 24mm and close focus capability,
