Couple of snaps for sake of illustration below (M11, 35/2 asph v2, f/2.8)

The background bokeh in the first shot looks very nice indeed. From your experience, would you say that the v1 renders distinctly different in that same situation? Better still, would you mind posting the same shot at the same aperture (f2.8) taken with a) the v1, and b) the v2?

I used to do that sort of comparo in the past but it takes too much effort to do it well sorry. All i can say is i wouldn't have bought the 35/2 asph v2 if it did not fix what i consider a weakness of the v1 variant i.e. its somewhat harsh OoF rendition at f/2.8 but it is a subjective matter of course so better try the lens in person to be sure, sorry again.

To close this brief praise for the Summicron 35/2 asph v2, please find attached a Normandy flag at f/2.8 (FF link 1 & crop link 2) and an ice cream tong showing slight color fringing at f/2 (FF link 3 & crop link 4). For another modern 35 with smooth bokeh, one may consider the very good Nokton 35/1.5 asph which is about the same size and a little lighter than the Summicron. Happy snaps 🙂

In the end I didn’t sell my lens yet. Simply because my dealer offered a very low price, his argument, he has a second hand already and it’s not selling (which is true as I follow his listings). As I decided that I wouldn’t buy another lens, I rejected his offer.

Now, I will force myself to work with this lens, maybe it will grow to me. Will follow @hansvonsadvice and remove the (enormous) lenshood.

The Summicron 35/2 asph v2 is taller than the Summicron 35/2 v4 anyway but it is shorter than the Summicron 35/2 asph v1 with its rectangular plastic hood when using the little 12550 metal hood and its cap.

Summicron 35/2 asph v2 with 12550 hood & 14285 cap (right) vs Summicron 35/2 asph v1 with 12526 hood & 14043 cap (left).

Shot at f/2 a month ago. Tri-X.

I wouldn't say that this is a clinical lens.

it looks like frontfocus, the focus clearly sits on the front chair

  • 3 months later...

Several months later I still have the lens. No bidders/enquiries at all. I also didn’t use it, in order to keep its look as new as it is.

Now I mounted it on the monochrom, and will keep it there for 90 days. See if this will change my mind and if I will appreciate this lens.

If not, I will change it when buying the new Q, and buy a nokton 1.2 instead.
