Fair enough. Are they any different or better than standard iPhone photographs though?

That was my point.

Well, by now it was enough examples provided to show it renders differently. As for better, any digital image processing for the looks degrades the image.

But better is not much of the technical aspect with mobile phone and smallish sensors Apple is putting in iPhones. It is all about the look. For some background swirl in cheap Industar FSU lens style is "better" or artificially (too unnatural) milky background.

This app is not any different from photos processing in the phone app. Just specific presets, emulations to some Leica optics.

Those who are capable using it straight. Dmitry Markov was one of those.

Or Pinkhassov, who has stopped using image processing apps on the phone and don't really need iPhone for it.

Anyone know how to activate the manual control that the press release mentions? Obviously, the exposure compensation is right on the main screen, but how do you access shutter / iso / focus controls?

Disappointed in the lens simulations. The color profiles are ok. But at that price, probably not going to keep it past the two week free trial.

There is a little faint grey bar at the bottom of the frame if you are holding the iPhone in portrait mode or the bar is on the side of the frame if in landscape mode:

1. Lux App must be in Photo Mode

2. Slide the little bar down will revel manual controls: White Balance, ISO, Shutter Speed, AF. Touch the one you want to change manually

3. Use the digital dial just below the manual controls to dial in each manual control value to the desired setting.

Wow, all I can focus on with the app is the €79 a year or nearly €800 over 10 years. Even at €79 to buy the app outright it is still too expensive. I can't see Leica renting out many of the apps.

OK, that is the rant over. The free version is pretty good, I just wish I could change lenses and exposure. For that I would pay €20 to unlock those features, but on a once off payment only. Oh, and an option to control colour balance would be nice too.

But at nearly €80 a year, EVERY year...

It is very expensive for basically having presets as a service.

ProCamera offers manual settings, raw shooting, presets, integrates the bokeh effects, supports video and more, and it's 60€ one time purchase or 13€ per year.

VSCO has tons of presets, editing tools, etc, and it's 21€ per year.

Halide is another solid app for manual shooters and it's 70€ OTP or 12€ per year.

80€ per year is ridiculous.

Yes, the idea of only renting an app and not owning it really stings.

I checked the App Store reviews and Leica only copy pastes the same reply to everyone when they state their displeasure with the app. Maybe one day they’ll offer a one time payment for the app, who knows. I’d be more inclined to like the app if there was a purchase option. No way at all I’m going to subscribe to it. I often have my TL2 with me, but I sure am not going to ‘rent’ a Leica app replacement for the times it’s not with me.

Test shot with Leica Lux app on my iPhone 13 Pro staring Dan. It’s great you can choose the aperture after taking the shot.

f/1.4 1/121s 26mm iso100 and f/11

I would pay a one time fee, but monthly subscription? No thanks.

It's a phone app, so there's always the concern that it might stop working at any time, at Apple's whim (or Google's whim if it was an Android app).

Do you have any real life example to share? Because I reckon that in 18 years of iOS, it never happened that an app suddenly stopped working because of “Apple’s whims”.

Anyway, even in the unlikely event that the app stops working after 1 year for whatever imaginary reason, a OTP will still be cheaper than a full 1 year subscription in the vast majority of cases. The reason why less and less companies offer a one time payment is because they earn more money via subscription.

Every iOS update brings with it stories about apps that stop working. Do a search. In the past year they also managed to break their own watches, and cellular connectivity, with security upgrades.

Apps can also stop working with new versions of iOS, which are nearly mandatory for security reasons. The same thing happens with Android, but this app isn't available for Android.

It's all a matter of personal choice anyway. The price isn't very high, provided that you to make better images (by your own standards). If you don't enjoy the app, "free" is too high a price!

Ridiculous. An iOS major update is not an "Apple's whim". These updates are communicated 3 months in advance - the iOS 18 WWDC was just 2 days ago - and developers have until September to fix their code, if necessary. If in 3 months a developer can't fix their code to accommodate new changes, then the problem lies somewhere else.

When Apple broke the cellular connectivity, no app was broken as a result. They all kept working, using the wi-fi. The fix to that issue came a few weeks later, though. Bugs happen, the point is if they also get fixed.

Yes, and as written above, Devs have 3 months of time before release to make sure things are good to go. The fault is with the apps developers. Do you trust Leica developers enough to fork out a one time payment for an app that has just been released? I certainly would, without the fear that the app suddenly stops working out of the blue after a month or three.

The price is skyrocket high for what is basically presets as a service, but of course if somebody enjoys using it and finds value in it, why not?

Thanks for the examples. The second image is a good example of how bad this type of bokeh simulation still is.

That must only be in the paid-for version. The two week trial version I have doesn't have any of these controls

What model iPhone are you using? I have the older 13 Pro Max. Also looks like there was an update a few days ago to v1.0.3.

iPhone 15 Pro

Perhaps best to submit an email to the app team through the app itself to see if they can further explain why you don't see that feature in P-Mode or Photo Mode and help you further. I am also in the two-week trial version of the Leica Lux Pro app, so not sure why I have access and you do not.

Other than being on the latest firmware for both iPhone 15 and the Lux App, perhaps uninstalling and reinstalling the Lux App might help, but I'm guessing you've already tried these typical mobile app troubleshooting. Also if you haven't turned off and then restarted your iPhone in a while there is a slight chance that could help. FWIW, we should all be turning on/off the iPhones at least once a week anyway.  Otherwise hopefully the Lux App tech team can provide you with further assistance.

At a minimum I find these manual settings are indeed fun to use.

I won’t email them as my trial will be well over by the time they respond.

My App is v 1.02(41) by the way. No update available here.

This is what my P screen shows
