I'm obsessed with the 50 Summilux ASPH bokeh at wide open. What 35 might give me something similar?

35mm is my fav focal length, and I’ve had the pleasure of shooting with every Leica lens ever made

My top picks are:

35ASPH pre FLE

35 APO

Bokeh is highly dependent on the distance from camera to subject, and subject to background

If you’re open to non Leica lenses, I recommend the Nokton 35/1.2 v1

Hari,

35mm is not my number one FL, but I completely agree with your choices and ranking. (As long as we are considering the AA not part of the conversation)

My pre-FLE is a late chrome copy, and I don’t see any focus shift at all.

And bonus points for including the Nokton 1.2 v1!

No idea on if it marches up well to the 50mm f1.4 asph but if I was in the market for a fast modern 35 then the pre fle is a lens that interests me a lot and the fall off/bokeh seems very nice to me. Since you have an sl2s, the focus shift issues are negated so it could be an interesting option.

Sorry, explain like I'm a 5yo, why is focus shift negated on an SL2S with that lens?

The EVF shows exactly what the sensor ‘sees’, so the user can focus accurately.

Tomorrow going to sell off my 35cron. I might have a serious look at the nokton…

It is worth looking at the APO Summicron - smaller than the alternatives, wonderful bokeh and probably only surpassed by the SL equivalent.

I have no experience with the Sumicron apo but for a faster, smaller and more affordable alternative, the Nokton 35/1.5 asph seems hard to beat.

The Voigtlander Nokton 35 1.5 is a good substitute for the 35 Lux, but like the 35 Lux, it doesn't look like the 50 Lux. That said, I didn't like how poorly the Nokton performed off center wide open at close distances. And since it lacks a floating element design, subjects at very close distance just don't pop off the screen like they do with the 35 Lux (in my opinion).

Could be worse. CV 35/1.5 asph at f/1.5, 0.6m here but de coloribus et bokus(?) non disputandum 😄

I think sunlit foliage is perhaps one of the biggest bokeh challenges a lens can have. Even a Noctilux would have trouble with that. 😉

But I think this lens handled it quite well.

I've used my Summilux 50/1.4 asph v1 since 2005 and i've never seen swirly bokeh out of it, i must say. Smooth bokeh at f/1.4 yes but also somewhat harsh at f/2.8 with ninja star bokeh balls i don't like much. Subjective matter anyway😎
