Recently (2 months ago) my M11 became wildly erratic on ‘Play’ in camera. I press the Play button and the images jump around randomly and between normal view and zoomed in/magnified. It is impossible to view and zoom in on an image because the screen flicks from one image to another, the zoom in magnification freezes off centre and so I can’t chimp to assess whether I am in the ballpark with my settings/photo.

I have tried a variety of SD cards in case any are corrupt. No solution. I have spoken to my Leica store in Sydney who said it is a known issue and a firmware update was expected to remedy it (hopefully they added) . I have upgraded to latest software 2.1.1 (today) No solution. I have factory reset numerous times, no solution. Removed and reinstalled the battery multiple times. No solution. I don’t believe I have a ‘sticky button’ as otherwise no issue arises.

I have videoed the issue (on iPhone) but cant upload that to demonstrate what is obviously a major fault because the Forum seems to limit file sizes to 2.44 mb

I love my M11 and 50mm NEW Summilux but these issues are making my $22k AUD investment a nightmare and what I expected for a bucket list dream into a nightmare. I know it’s a first world problem but hey …. we’re all talking first world issues on these forums.

I have tried to search this forum & Googled ad nauseam. No solution identified. Can anybody relate a similar fault &/or solution. I am happy to PM the video to anybody who might have a similar issue or thinks they have a solution.

Obviously the next step is to try to get Leica warranty to asses and optimistcally repair but given the inevitable delays and many unsatisfactory experiences others have posted I am hoping that someone has encountered and solved a similar problem and I can get on with enjoying my M11 rather than waiting months for a possible solution.

x

Never happened to me so just a couple of empirical ideas at random:
1. Did you try to format your card with SD Card Formatter?
2. Did you try to remove  the "settings.lcse" file from your card? (save it before erasing it)
3. Did you try to work with the internal memory only?

Thanks lct for your thoughts. Haven’t tried any of those 3 suggestions.
I have had 2 years totally trouble free until this recent glitch.
Confounds me why (and how) I would need to introduce such measures and what effect any or all of your suggestions might help

Everything works as it should except review of photos when I press the Play button.

You already tried all the obvious actions and the newest firmware didn't help either.

Now I could be wrong and unless some-one steps in who tells otherwise, I don't believe this is a known issue.

Too me there's only one solution to it: back to its maker ...

Ray,

I’m a bit of a troglodyte. Is the  ‘hard reset’ you suggest different from a factory reset which I have done numerous times +/or firmware update2.1.1 which I waited for and did yesterday, which I understand, also amounts to a full reset?

try deleting the user profile and making a new one..and is the silly fotos app connected to the camera when this happens?

Petrichor,  I suggest if you can't clear the error and behaviour, then get Leica Store Sydney to send it to Wetzlar.  I recommend you make a copy of your video that shows the camera malfunctioning and write as a detailed description of the problem(s).  Include your video copy and list of problems for Leica to trouble shoot.  Also describe your SD cards, formatting and camera resets.  Then have Sydney send it for a rehab vacation to Wetzlar.  Leica will either fix or replace your M11.  Hopefully without charge if out of warranty.  Try sending in as a warranty issue as well. Hopefully you registered your M11 with Leica and include a copy of the invoice with your M11 for repair.  r/ Mark

Since you are protected by Australian Consumer Law, and you have a camera with a defect that Leica has informed you is a known issue, with no timeframe to rectify, I would seek a refund. You just need to assert your rights. You have a camera you cannot use in the manner intended.

Buy an M10 that is actually fit for its designed purpose, and perhaps return to M11 when this known defect is rectified.

Some guidance here https://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/buying-products-and-services/guarantees,-contracts-and-warranties/consumer-guarantees

Since Leica has indicated a firmware update is required to effect a repair, they do not currently have a solution. This renders warranty effectively useless. I would be seeking a refund.

Well, I’m truly down some deep rabbit hole now. Tried everything suggested anbove and now, to top it off, I can’t take a photo at all.
Seems like my ‘Play’ issues at the beginning of this thread have transmogrified to when I turn the camera on. Everything thereafter is haywire so the camera is now unusable.

I don’t know if the problem was progressing from bad to worse or firmware 2.1.1 plays a role in exacerbating the fault.

Subject on framing composition and focus irrespective of focus mode jumps around like a kangaroo in a fresh paddock.
… and it doesn’t always replicate so it’s like ‘trying to find the soap in a bathtub’.

Back to Leica repairs or Wetzlar - I’m afraid.

Thanks for your time and suggestions 🥺

As I wrote above, it sounds like a problem with a button that is sticking. Possibly the center button on the directional pad.
