Actually Panasonic stop making compact cameras allowed Leica to fully redesigned D-Lux 8 to match Q3 UI.
Otherwise it would still be a Lumix clone with another skin.

There is a rumor that Panasonic will announce a new camera on June 5th. Maybe it will be a rebadged D-Lux 8 🤣.

Just read some early impressions from the Phoblographer.  They think it is probably same sensor but newer processor; the auto focus is apparently quite fast, and battery life is excellent.  Disappointing if just the same old sensor, but other improvements certainly nice to hear about.  Also unlikely to get Leica looks, which I find odd, unless they are specifically gate-keeping that feature for their full frame cameras.

The D-Lux7 often produced images with the ‘look’ and I cannot see why the ‘8’ should be any different!  It has a great Leica lens… Nothing wrong with a true and trusted sensor..🍻

True, I am still shooting on the CL and TL2 and am still impressed by the images generated, but of course I would be happy if the D-LUX had more megapixels for cropping or better low light performance.  Are there many new m43 sensors being released anymore?

DPR writes that it has USB-C.

Yes but does it come with a USB-C cable to USB-2 or something old like that? I want a USB-C to USB-C ( modern cable for connecting to a Mac or USB-C charger ).

Got to play with it yesterday and made a first impression video you can watch here:

Here are two examples, nothing artistic here just to show recoverability and also depth of field at its maximum aperture and MFD

I’m tempted given that it can use DNG. I’ll wait to see comprehensive tests from people but DNGs should allow software like DxO PureRaw4 or Topaz PhotoAI to overcome any slight quality problems with high ISO files or heavily underexposed images. I always found the raw images from my Olympus EM-5 Mk2 excellent after processing and that was a 16MP sensor so I can’t see why this would be worse as long as the lens is of good quality.

I have to say that I quite like the idea of the D-Lux 8. I own a GR III and IIIx and have used them for years as my pocket cameras, but at the end of the day I don't love using them because I like a viewfinder. For my use case, the image quality seems good enough; if I want really great IQ I'll just use an M. The zoom lens seems useful. I'm pretty tempted!

I get that it's old tech, but that doesn't mean it's bad. I care more about the size and ease of use than the absolutely IQ, for a camera like this.

Great videos, your second video showed up on my algorithm yesterday so I watched it.  Definitely getting a bit more tempted now, seems like it’s not actually completely recycled, with new processor and better auto focus and menus.  Still would’ve liked a new sensor but you make a good point about the ability to zoom in reducing the need to crop as with the X100VI.

didn’t know that the old D-LUX didn’t do raw, but yes raw would markedly improve image quality.

D-Lux 7 has raw output.

Or I guess DNG is the new feature?

It seems so. Before it used Panasonic's raw format.

Does anyone see any advantage of using DNG instead of other raw formats?

I’ve read somewhere that DNG can be used with older photo software.

The compact camera idea continues to excite me. I am also on the waiting list for a X100vi, but I have never liked them in the past that much and always sell them on. I am kind of addicted to waiting lists! The key issue is that the lens isn't amazing and its not that small, so you need the same size carry back that you would use for, say an M10 and small lens.

The best compact camera ever was the Sony RX1, I wish they would release an update!

I think the VF and M4/3s and usability of the D-Lux 8 will be quite unique on the market. I like the Sony RX100 series but the 1cm sensor is a noticeable downgrade, especially in low light.

I am on the "waiting list" for the D-Lux 8 now, and if it comes before the X100Vi will cancel that one.

I disagree with you, I'm afraid.  I don't particularly care if it looks like the Q3; it's more about its specs. Apart from dng files, it's an exceedingly underwhelming upgrade, if you can even call it that.  I also hate the fact they've removed the exposure comp dial, which I used frequently.  I'm not into button, then menu-diving to get at something that had a great place to begin with.  Same sensor, same lens... blah.  Huge disappointment.

I agree, I think of the D-Lux 8 as a sad substitute for a Leica CL.

I don’t think anyone looks or thinks of the ‘8’ as a replacement CL.  We do  definitely want a a CL mk11 and not forgetting a Mono version.. 🍻
