Yes. Already advertised in the shops. Available June 20th. Aimed at street photography but a bit of a big thing for that purpose IMO. 1499 €

We must read different parts of the internet, everything I have read about this lens says it's for the video crowd.

I certainly agree it's a big clumsy thing for street photography.

 From Thom Hogan:-

"Curiously, I think Sigma thinks that user isn't a photographer, but a videographer. I write that because the lens has a lot of things that cater specifically to the videographer (declickable aperture ring, lockable aperture ring, minimized focus breathing, no weight shifting while zooming or focusing [gimbal friendly]), and so on."

As a street photographer it sure isn't aimed at me.

That focus ring is probably to make the lens attractive for S5iiX owners which is a full hybrid stills-video camera. The 70-200 is exactly the same. Maybe a new general feature for Sigma zooms? It certainly does not get in the way of photography.
Nor do  think that 70-200 is a specific video lens. I think that Sigma is harmonizing there zoom range.

I am also a big fan. Relatively light and reasonably compact, built like a tank and the image quality -dare I say it? - rivals the 90-280. And f2.8… AF is extremely fast.

Sigma delivers again and again. A very valuable partner in the L-alliance.

Try the 50/1.2 and be prepared for jaw-dropping performance starting from wide open. SIGMA is on-fire with many of their recent lenses from the ART line. Just waiting for the 105/1.4 or 135/1.8 to be updated to the DG DN mount and I will gladly open my wallet for one of these. The DG HSM versions are reportedly absolutely stellar and without rival.

As someone who regularly uses focal lengths from 28-50 and shoots video as well as stills, this looks like an excellent, albeit heavy, option. Like many other video shooters, I have a Sigma 18-35 f1.8 which is approximately 28-50 on aps-c, so a native 28-45 full frame lens with f1.8 will provide much more depth of field options. As for stills, I can't see this as a carefree walkaround lens due to the weight, but for work, it is the same weight as the Sigma 24-105 f4 DG I used to use with the Sigma MC21 adapter. Where it loses in reach, it gains in speed.

A couple of weekends ago, I shot a birthday celebration with the M9 + Distagon 35/1.4 and S5 + 50/1.8, and I used the S5 a lot more due to the autofocus. A 28-45 f1.8 would have really come in handy, especially with Sigma's image quality.

I’m not a pro, but when I go out for shooting, my standard set nowadays is the 70-200 on the S5ii, the 28-70 on the SL 601. (That is when I am not keeping it ultra-compact with the CL and 18-56+55-135 😉
The reason that I don’t put the 28-70 on my S5 which matches the S5ii in user interface is that the SL sensor puts the IQ of the 28-70 on a much higher level. Additionally the S5ii sensor was developed in conjunction with Leica and the result is that the cameras match in colour rendering, admittedly with the S5ii outperforming the SL in the rendering of the finest detail.
With perfect framing over 28-200 mm with a continuous f 2.8, who needs more than 24 MP?  Not me.
I can imagine that even an event pro would be quite happy with this set.

You have me interested in the S5ii....how is the high ISO performance?

I just took the Sigma 50 1.2 out yesterday and shot it against my 50 APO SL and the 50 Summilux-SL on the SL3.  I have all the RAW files and may make a folder on Dropbox so anyone here can download the files and compare them.  The exposures aren't exactly matched because I was shooting outdoors, but if you're looking for comparisons in sharpness and rendering at different apertures it could be helpful.  I just posted a photo of a peacock that I took wide open at f/1.2 and it is about as sharp as anything I've seen.  The rendering and falloff looks great as well.

Mirrors my experience. As the first bit of Japanese glass I've bought in over 25 years, my expectations were very tempered. I could not have been more wrong about my concern when I opened the first f/1.2 images from the SL2. Sharp...could nor ask for more....but more importantly was the isolation and buttery backgrounds, without the nervousness I can see on my 35 and 75 APO's. As well, the AF is noticeably faster.....like, significantly faster, especially compared to my 75 APO.

Yep, if the 28-45/1.8 had come out before the APO's, this is what I would have bought....3 prime lenses with prime lens quality in one; add the SIGMA 85/1.4 DG DN ART and call it a day....

So I got this lens recently and have spent just a days walking around with it. I do actually use it as my main walk-around lens, despite the weight. Really, it's not that heavy (esp. compared to the native SL zooms). I use it on my SL3, and I have to say it's truly a replacement for a bag of primes. I know people used to say this about many short range zoom lenses, but it's true for this one. When out shooting, I often forgot that I had a zoom lens on because it felt like I was using a 28mm prime (or had my Q3 with me).

There are no corrections available yet in PureRAW/DxO for this lens on the SL3, which is a shame since there's a bit of non-constant distortion. The range is obviously limited, but I wouldn't treat this is a standard zoom, more like the aforementioned bag of primes. On a 60MP sensor, 45mm still gets you quite far. The ability to go all the way to 1.8, throughout the entire range, is just obscene. I wasn't expecting the difference to be so severe between this and a "standard" 2.8 zoom, but esp. for late-evening shots, this is spectacular. Another unexpected bonus is the fully internal zoom: it's a heavy lens, but you can swing it around while walking without a risk of creep. Time will tell if the lens suffers from the same dust-pumping as it's ancient Art ancestor (the 18-35 crop lens).

So highly, highly recommended. But it will give you an existential crisis when looking at your other zooms because barely any can live up to this.
