Frankly I just wish they would make a 28mm f1.4 dg dn

Absolutley, I consider it's just a matter of time when such a lens will be released.

Sigma really impresses these days. Exciting high quality lenses launched monthly almost.

So true. I waited about 6 years for the 21mm SL lens, lost patience, bought the new 20mm f1.4 dg dn Sigma and it is frankly astonishing, I have no desire to buy the Leica 21mm any more.

The little 24/3.5 is so good I have two, one for Sony and one for L-mount.

I have to admit, I kind of don't get this lens. It is so large for such a small zoom range. 1.8 itself is not really all that fast, especially in the days of stabilization and super high iso's. If bokeh is more important there are surely better options. You would really only need two primes to cover this range, given how narrow it is and the resolution available these days for cropping. Was there a group of users looking for something like this? I can definitely understand, for example, the 20-60mm Panasonic, but this one does not quite make sense to me.

I fully agree with you. This is not a lens, I've been waiting for. I am curious about the Lumix large-aperture-standardzoom as announced by Panasonic's lens roadmap. This might be an interesting lens. I guess it will be 28-70mm F2.0, but I hope it will not have the dimensons of the Canon RF 28-70mm F2.0 (1,43 kg / 14cm long).

Yeah, I guess for me the 24-90mm 2.8-4.5 would make so much more sense. A much more usable zoom range, similar dimensions it seems, and only a stop and a quarter difference on the wide end. At 45mm the 24-90 is still probably about f3.3 or so? So a stop and a half to a stop and two thirds slower? Not a massive difference in exchange for noticeably wider on the wide end and much tighter on the long end. 24mm is about 75 degrees field of view on 35mm, 28mm is about 65. 45mm is about 44 degrees, while 90mm is 23 degrees. Those are some substantial differences to give up for mostly a stop to a stop and a half.

Perhaps this lens is more of a halo product than anything else. It’s the first f1.8 zoom ever released, after all. It’s more of a statement of the capacity of Sigma, which went from being a mediocre player to a true force of the industry, now capable of competing with Leica, Canon, Sony and the rest in terms of glass quality.

That's a good point. There are other Sigma lenses released recently where I do not see much sense in it.

15mm F1,4 DG DN DIAGONAL FISHEYE14mm F1,4 DG DN | Art - large, heavy, expensive, limited usecase.

Especially the fisheye is kind of redicilous and nobody was waiting for.

However, I appreciate Sigma releasing new lenses....it's better to have more options than less for L-Mount. But there are essential lenses missing in the lineup, e.g. the already mentioned 28mm DG DN Art.

Panasonic's strategy is to design more compact and lightweight lenses, which I do much appreciate. I love the 28-200mm, even it is slow.

It makes sense as a video lens, especially when you consider that you can switch to Super-35/APC-C and get 68mm equivalent on the long end. That means you might not have to switch lenses all day, which is a huge time saver.

I agree. (With Dirk above...Bernard posted as I was writing). I do think, however, that part of Sigma's strategy is to release the lenses that other companies do not offer, since they have far fewer buyers of their cameras. I am sure the overwhelming majority of Sigma lenses are sold for other mounts, where they have to compete against all the native lenses. With these weirder lenses they can offer them across two or more mounts and hopefully find enough buyers for them to make sense. The best part of Sigma is their willingness to do this, and their ability to make these lenses with robust build quality, high optical standards and low price. It truly is a winning combination. I mostly use Leica lenses but I have had three Sigma lenses -- 24mm 3.5, 105mm 2.8 Macro and 35mm f2 DG DN. I still use the 24 and 105 as the main lenses for those focal lengths, and I replaced the 35mm with the 35mm APO SL because I did not really like its performance. But all three combined cost less than the one 35mm APO SL. The 105mm in particular has no meaningful optical difference from the other APO Summicrons, at least as far as I have been able to tell on the SL2. I am sure there are a few minor nuances and differences in color balance etc. But overall, it is stunning what you get for the money, especially compared to even top of the line lenses just 10-15 years ago.

Anyway, so while I don't quite get this one, I am still glad they made it.

Even if it is the same size as the Canon, it may be an option for me.  I usually carry the SL3 with the APO 21, APO 35, APO 50 and APO 75 in my bag.  A 28-70 f2, even at a larger size, would still make things easier.

As per the recent interview of Sigma's CEO Kazuto Yamaki:

"First of all, I believe it’s one of Sigma's missions to create niche products. If we only concentrate on standard products and release lower-priced versions, it’s not good: we would not be able to contribute to the development of the photography culture. As a lens manufacturer it’s our mission to develop such niche lenses that satisfy a specific target group."

Here's the full interview

To me it also makes sense from a commercial standpoint: find a gap / niche nobody else is filling, create a valid product, and the person that buys into it will eventually buy other Sigma standard lenses in the future.

Wow, I hope you have a good camera insurance. In this case I understand your standpoint. Would you sell your APO-lenses for a 28-70 F2.0?

Yes, my post was a bit provocative intentionally. 🙃

No, but I also carry the same kit when I travel.  For that purpose the zoom would be the better option.

Yes. Already advertised in the shops. Available June 20th. Aimed at street photography but a bit of a big thing for that purpose IMO. 1499 €
