Good morning everyone  ,
I saw that there are two other discussions on the forum regarding this topic.
However, it is not clear which is the best 6-bit encoding for this lens (Trielmar 16-18-21 F4? Elmarit M 21 f2.8 11334 pre aspherical?
Perhaps someone who had it coded by a laboratory could indicate here for which corresponding Leica lens it was actually coded, perhaps also posting a photo of the coding?

I hope someone kindly intervenes.

Thank you

Antonio

I attach a table with coding recommended by Zeiss, but I would like a comparison with whoever had this lens coded by a specialized laboratory or through various tests

My ZM 21/4.5 is hand-coded as Elmarit 21/2.8 11134 (code 000001) on the M11 but i did not try this code on the M8. I would rather follow the Zeiss recommendation that was made specially for the M8 IIRC. BTW that recommendation does no mention the Elmarit 21/2.8 pre-asph but either the Tri-Elmar 16-18-21/4 at 16mm, or the Elmarit 24/2.8 asph.

Stupid question, I have a Zeiss Distagon 18 f4 I use on my M8 a lot. I have found no way to set this in the camera unless I change the lens mount to one with the pits for lens detection. I have been using the ZM19 profile in Photoshop ACR but it over corrects, probably because of the crop sensor. It would be nice to set this in the camera, Lens Detection and Set only gives me On, On + IR/UV, and Off, so it seems it will only set for lenses that are marked, is there anyway to set specific lenses? I could try the Leica 24 f2.8 in ACR or the ZM25 profiles and see what happens.

Long time no used my M8.2 but the M8 manual (p. 86) says:
« In the main menu (see p. 80/93), select Lens Detection (5.1.1) and in the respective sub-menu, select the desired option ».
I guess you can choose the lens profile you prefer this way but it won't be a non-Leica profile anyway.
Hope this helps.

The manual I received with my camera is in Spanish and Italian, the camera was originally bought in Mexico. I am not very good in either language. With Lens Detection I can get to a sub-menu only with Set, the as I said the choices are On, On UV/IR, and Off, those are the options. My firmware is 2,024, which I believe is the latest.

Sorry i have not my M8.2 on hand so i would ask other colleagues here.

EDIT: If your lens is a not too old Zeiss 18/4  it must have a groove on the flange for 6-bit coding i suppose. Is it the case on your copy?

11134 is the Elmarit 21/2.8 pre-asph (code 000001). It is easy to hand-code since it has a single coding pit. Approximately here but better use a template to avoid coding errors. My ZM 21/4.5 is hand-coded the same way BTW. Works fine on M11 but i did not try on my M8.2.

Just a side note, I think I passed East Thetford, VT on the way to Strafford, VT last fall.

That would work, but a GPS dead zone. Lots of folks find themselves on back dirt roads following a GPS. A great place for fall foliage, especially the town hall in Strafford.

On the M8.2, and I surmise the 8  as the software release was the same, the options are:

ON

On + UV/IR

Off

No other options, the code selects the software correction, no code then the is no correction. The ON without correction just adds the lens name to the Exif.

I did some tests with the Zeiss Biogon 21 f4.5 ZM on Leica M9 and firmware 1.216 (the latest available for M9).
I manually set the lens profile from the camera menu and I saw that the profile that best corrects edge problems is that of the Elmarit M 24 f2.8 asph (one of the two profiles recommended by Zeiss itself on its website) .
It seems to me that with this profile set on camera (or with 6 bit coding on the flange) and with the new 1.216 firmware things have improved a lot.
The   attached photos has in the file name the various settings and corrections used (capture one 10 software).
Even more so by setting the profile of 24 f2.8 asph things should improve considerably on a Leica m8 which is APSH (factor 1.33) as the extreme edges visible on the M9 will not be visible in the frame

Try the profile for 11134 if M9 has it (sorry no body to check), it should eliminate the purple edges entirely or 90% at least...

It seems to me that there are no differences between the shot with the Elmarit M 24 2.8 asph profile setting and the one with the Elmarit M 21 2.8 11134 profile setting

If you click on the photos the link to flickr opens and you can see them much better there; here some seem to have the edges still affected by some problems, but in the original files on flickr these problems are practically not present

I submit to you the result of an experiment: I took a photo with a Leica M8 and Zeiss Biogon 21 f4.5 ZM at f8 and focusing at infinity (6-bit non-coded lens, lens recognition off, UV-IR filter screwed onto the lens ) - I then used a sample file to process the photo with the Flat Field plug-in currently available in the Library drop-down menu of Lightroom Classic current version.
The result seems pretty good to me. I look forward to your comments, thank you

Leica M8.2 Zeiss Biogon 21 f4.5 ZM , 6-bit non-coded lens, lens recognition off, UV-IR filter screwed onto the lens, taken at f8 and focused at infinity, photo then processed with Flat Field in Lightroom
