coleica Posted May 14, 2024 Share #1 Posted May 14, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello one and All. Hypothetical situation. I am on vacation where I will be spending 5 days at an exquisite resort for the rich and famous (my hypothetical, my fantasy). If I plug the SD used to capture images, into my handy dandy laptop it could show a directory tree like this: DCIM/100LEICA. The understanding being the new images will be stored under the 100LEICA directory, and the images inside it will be numbered sequentially; something along the lines of "Leica1001001", "Leica1001002", etc... Hopefully I am understanding it correctly. Now suppose I add a new directory with the path DCIM/200LEICA. And suppose I start taking additional images the next day. Will the new images be stored in the 100LEICA directory or the 200LEICA directory? Thanks in advance.
Advertisement Posted May 14, 2024 Posted May 14, 2024 Hi coleica, Take a look here Can adding folder names in the SD card be used for saving images from different days/times/locations?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted May 14, 2024 Share #2 Posted May 14, 2024 Isn't it much simpler to use separate SD cards and to rename the folders on import by descriptive names like "pool party". "champagne dinner" etc.?
pop Posted May 14, 2024 Share #3 Posted May 14, 2024 The point eludes me. You can sort the directory by date and time and then you will see immediately when each photograph has been taken.
M11 for me Posted May 14, 2024 Share #4 Posted May 14, 2024 Do you work with Lightroom Classic? Do you import your images into Lightroom Classic? Are you aware that with that import you can change the name of your images: As in the exif data you have stored the date and time that an image was taken then you can import images by using that information. For many years all my images are renamed to date and time. An example: "2024-05-14 at 12-13-55.dng". Then you have what you need. In the Apple Finder or in Windows Explorer you see then your list with all those images with their new names.

coleica Posted May 14, 2024 Author Share #6 Posted May 14, 2024 Thank you all for your input. I will be taking a two week trip later in the year where many images will be taken (I hope). Based on the responses to my original post, it does seem I over thought what I wanted to accomplish. Your advice(s) will make my life easier. Thanks. I only format the card after the images are fully edited.
