Very interesting. Such dogs traditionally worked in pairs alone in the mountains.  We once had two Pyenean Mountain dogs, not at the same time. Historically they worked in pairs in the mountains, with one on duty and the other resting. I imagine the missing dog in your picture has a similar genetic inheritance.
