Shimoda V2 30 don't think it's going to work

See a lot of posts about bags, few with pics and examples, details.  Just got this Shimoda V2 30 this AM and boy this is super tight.  I really wanted to have the option of putting on the 100-400 and getting it through side access and that is totally out of the question.  They say it fits a 16" MacBook pro and while that is technically true, it is crazy tight.  so tight that the back is difficult to zip closed with laptop in the sleeve, it takes some fiddling.  I don't want a massive bag but something maybe a little less of a chore to fit a SL3, 24-90, 50 lux, and 100-400.  I may just abandon side access and see how it all fits then.

Shimoda’s new Urban Explore v30 has a slightly larger linsert that will fit the SL3 mounted with the 100-400, and if you position them on the left side of the cube, it works with side access. 

The bag itself is less everyday then they’d like to think, I feel, and the new colours are drab, so I’ve returned mine but YMMV.

I think a Lowepro Sling bag might fit your needs better. Much more comfortable to carry than a side bag too.

They don’t advertise it, but you can fit the large camera insert in the 30…

I have the smaller Slingshot but not the 100-400 so I cannot try it out

Update.  Ordered the 30L urban explorer as the cube was a bit bigger and deeper but still the same issue really.  I could get it out of the side access but it would be a wrestling match every time, not easy grab.  Plus, it would have been really tight with the 24-90 and 50 SL 1.4 in there.  Then it really didn't want to zip closed with the 16" MacBook in the sleeve.  Right now it's looking like the Peak Design 30L if I want side access or may try the Nomatic 25L but that is rear access only.  Kit consisting of VE 100-400, 24-90 and 50 SL1.4 is not easy to find a bag for with room left over to carry a jacket etc in the top unless I order a massive 45L and up which I do not want to do.  Trying to stay in the "personal item" carry on range.

Hmm. For aircraft travel I have given up on  bags and rucksacks. I use a trolley/rucksack by Vanguard and stuff one or two empty day bags in my general luggage

I've been using Wandrd's camera cubes where it comes in 3 sizes, and depending on the setup being used, cube fits in a roller bag. I pack another sling (peak design, wandrd etc) in the check-in luggage for use after getting to destination.

For larger gear, I've used their large cube into their backpack but find the weight too much to carry during transit to/from airports and the cube in roller helped take weight off during transit trips.

I just ordered the Explore V2 35...  bigger than I want to go but may not have a choice.  My original goal was to keep the camera bag closer to a personal item.  These are all close but if i run into a strict luggage crew they won't pass. I see people allowed on flights with huge carry on's and huge backpacks all the time but I don't have that kind of luck.  At least with Shimoda I can take out the cube if forced to.  I will try the Urban Explore again without the hoods on and see what difference that makes.  The Peak Design 30L is a really nice bag but everything is a bit loose for my tastes inside the dividers.  Plus, i can tell the shoulder straps will not be comfortable for a long day.  Also, not crazy about the gaps in the top flap of the bag even when closed.   On another note for small trips I ordered the LowePro Flipside 200 AW II and it is perfect.  Easily holds the 100-400 VE mounted with 24-90 inside too.  Could probably squish the 50 lux in the top.

I had the original Shimodo bag but  never warmed up to it for whatever reasons. Had assorted Lowe Pro bags many years ago, and the original Gura Gear bags which I did like except for one HUGE fault as I see it—there was no room to stuff in a warm winter jacket, sweatshirt, snacks,… when going hiking to photograph and got warm had to strap my jacket to the outside of the bag and it sometimes was like a flag flapping in the breeze. If just working from a vehicle the Gura Gear would have sufficed, in the field not for me. Latest bag I have been very happy with the last few years is made by Nya-Evo. It is roomy, can stuff in a jacket, and whatever the material it is made from is very water resistant. Last summer was in Alaska and a few times a hard rain fell the others I was with all put on their rain covers over assorted bags, I would have put mine on but thought I forgot it though was in another pocket of the bag. Anyway, everything in the bag was dry.

I love my shimoda, version 1, but use a set of Panasonic zooms 16-35, 24-105, 70-300 and my Q3 with an iPad Pro 11 rather than my mbp 16 which does fit but is indeed extremely tight 

All much lighter and an ok weight for a long hike for me, wouldn’t dream of carrying your planned load personally 

Ive found it to be very watertight, briefly in a river when capsized in a canoe 😬, got it out fast but not far short of a minute in the water and all ok

Lucky as well out of spec but means I don’t worry about rain at all

I love my Wandred's but rarely use them as side access bags. I can get my Sl3 and 100-400 plus 24-90 and 14-24 in the bottom half of the Wotancraft. Hoods on the 100-400 and (reversed) and separately for the 24-90. Tried the Sl50 1.4 (instead of 14-24) and it's doable but a bit tight for my liking but it easily goes in the top load section.

huwm: I don't plan on carrying all of it all the time just need to be able to get it all from place to place.  There will be times when at least one lens will make no sense to carry.

Flash: which wandrd bag?  I can't seem to find the Wotancraft available quickly.

I am starting to think I may have to order multiple bags.... ugh.

I have finally found something that works to my satisfaction.  Shimoda V2 35L with medium DSLR cube.  The cube is tall enough and bag is deep enough so that you aren't cramming the the SL3 in there but it still holds tight when zipped closed.  Plus, you can stand up a 50 lux and 24-90 with hoods and again the are not crammed in there but still held tight.  This also gives me plenty of room to throw the Q3 in the top with room left over for a jacket or whatever.  Just comparing this to the Peak Design 30L and even the Shimoda Urban Explore 30 in the house the straps are way more comfortable and this has a waist belt too.  The Peak Design there was a lot of flopping around of the lenses and body with just minimal moving in the house which I don't care for.  Also, this is early days in my Leica journey and I am sure I will add something else and there is room for it too. This setup also allows easy side access without having to wrestle the SL3 through the side opening.  The shallow depth of the Explore V2 30L and the Urban Explore 30L made it very difficult to use side access with SL3.

Just realised mine is the action with roll top not the style you’re talking about but you seem to have sorted it anyway 👍

I currently have 4 different bags for a variety of purposes 😬 and I expect there are some here who are in double figures
