Hi, Ive bought a lovely Leica R4 but the strap is 1- too short 2- horrible 3- showing rust on strap side of link

The plastic slider over the ring will not move as the inside of the ring under the slider has rusted

How do I remove this horrible strap while retaining it if I ever sell the camera?

I don’t think that a strap, which is ubiquitous, will add anything to the resale value of the camera. Leica used it for decades on all their cameras. Most people like it.

One of these or a third party strap? If it's the original, I've never seen one rusted up - hopefully that's not a sign of poor storage or some adventure that might have affected the interior of the camera! You might try WD40 or something, but you'd have to be very careful it didn't get into the camera.

Thanks for that but its a forum and that wasnt the question

Your question was how to remove it in case of resale. I would definitely remove it before selling it. It lowers the value if anything.

The value of your R4 is higher without a rusty strap. So no need to save the original strap. I would recommend a small bolt cutter to remove it.
