Hi,

I am using quite a time the user profiles and I am wondering about how it can happen that the camera is not in the preset I defined for it.

the reason is:

I wonder why my camera is not set in any preset anymore and I am changing preset things and I am not sure which preset I am in ….

I am sure that the profile mechanic and how to use can be improved and I am curious how you interact with this feature.

also : there are things I like to change with all profiles and I find it difficult to change once you started.

I would prefer if I could see the profile settings on my iPhone or my MacBook.

sometimes it’s also interesting to print them out and think about what you would change without looking at the camera.

I know that I can do this manually, but to be able to have this feature would be great.

I like to hear your take on the profiles.

The thing I have with the profiles is, I am using computer app since a long time and profiles for the apps for a very long time.
there are apps where this is solved excellent and then there are apps where you struggle.
the Leica profiles look 👀 a certain way to me, but when I use them they behave differently.

Do you also experience this?

Whenever I check, I find that my profile has been changed to the one with an X on it (which turns on bluetooth). I dont find the profile feature as useful as I expected it to be. If, instead of having to press menu to see it, the active profile icon were displayed on the shooting screen, it would be more useful.

I created a small spreadsheet for each profile on both my CL and my Q3 so I can see my settings at a glance. For safety’s sake I also have backup copies of profiles on a memory card should something fail.

What happens when you change out of a setting that’s part of a profile is that the camera says “I don’t recognize this profile” so does not assign a number or name to it.

If you close the camera with these settings “live”, the camera will hold them in what I think of as temporary memory and they will be the start up settings when you restart the camera.

At any point you can revert to the original profile simply by selecting that profile number. Or save the changes to an existing profile or create a new profile.

But there lies the problem, I have to guess which preset I was in the last time bevor the preset went to “live” . It would be better if we see the profile with an Asterix (*) or something else, so that we know which original Profil the “live” Profil is based on.
that’s how it’s done in my editing software.
then I know > ok Profil 1 (Standard) and can go and save it.
And it would be so nice if “long hold” on the Profil would bring me to “save changes to Profile” and I am done without having to go to > profiles > scroll up > edit > preset > save ….

So this is the second time that someone did his own spreadsheet.

so I assume that much more people are making spreadsheet for profiles for Leica cameras >

then I would assume that it could be a good idea to have something that helps us with that, true?

Not sure if this helps; I have assigned the profile function to one of the buttons on the back of the camera. I turn the camera on, I press the profile button and know fairly quickly which profile is set and change it if necessary. Takes a second or two to do. Whenever I make a change, I save the profiles into the sd card in the camera. It would be nice if the profiles could be stored in the Foto App. Just in case, although I suspect everybody knows, when doing a firmware upgrade/update profiles are deleted.

I completely agree with Pelu2010. The profile management can be greatly simplified and streamlined. Having feedback which profile has been altered would be a great start. Having an app that would allow for profile management and tweaking would be awesome.

I like so much about the Leica menu system, but this area deserves more attention.

Probably a carry-over from Panasonic firmware - there the profiles are selected by a physical dial and the camera will jump to the profile in use when saving.

I have no interest in profiles on my phone that I can tweak in an app. It’s an extra unnecessary step that I don’t need.

I only have 4 profiles for each camera, so if I make a change it’s easy to remember both which profile I was using, and which setting I changed.

If you hit menu, it is but one further step to change the profile. I’d rather save the F buttons for things further down the menu tree.

I do not mean any disrespect, but it seems that you are overthinking this process. Why would you rely on your memory to determine what your preset was the last time you used your camera. For me, the simple process is 1. What environment do I plan on shooting. 2. What preset best fits my environment. 3. Set the preset. 4. Shoot the image. Excel spreadsheets work well for keeping an index of the presets on your camara. I get that you would like this to be app drive, but it appears that is not possible with this camara at this point in time. Again, I am not a pro, but for me the simpler the process, the better the result. Following this 4-step method ensures that I have thought about what I want to shoot, have set the camera to the preset that best accomplishes that, and I get the best result for that preset without a lot of additional thought or worry that I might not have the right preset. Works for me but might not work for you. Hope this helps and happy shooting.

I think that's the way most of us work. It's only what happens when you change profiles or change a setting midway through a shoot.

If I did it your way, I could not possibly use only four profiles for the variety of photos that I make. I use only one profile which suffices for all. It contains only the major settings that I do not generally want altered.

If I were to use a computer to record these settings I would use Notepad. Excel sounds like overkill to me. 😀

I agree with you. I use the preset mostly to be able to change any setting and then to revert quickly to the basic settings of the preset. In particular to be sure that the WiFi/ Bluetooth ( draining the battery) is off when I don’t need it

I am a new user of the Q3. I did find creating profiles in the camera a cumbersome and time-consuming process. Once completed and satisfied with a profile one may never need to do the process again. After reading this thread I will create a base profile, which would have Fotus off, and functions that I require. I can build off of this profile to create a new one with other items if needed.

It would be awesome to have a web-based tool to build profile(s) emulating the menu system. Export a SETTINGS.LCS file to a memory card for the camera. This would allow a review of your settings in the tool, or additional changes.

Here I opened my settings file in a text editor and this is what makes up my existing profile. Copied and pasted below. SETTINGS.LCS file attached.

I am a new user of the Q3. I did find creating profiles in the camera a cumbersome and time-consuming process. Once completed and satisfied with a profile one may never need to do the process again. After reading this thread I will create a base profile, which would have Fotus off, and functions that I require. I can build off of this profile to create a new one with other items if needed.

It would be awesome to have a web-based tool to build profile(s) emulating the menu system. Export a SETTINGS.LCS file to a memory card for the camera. This would allow a review of your settings in the tool, or additional changes.

Why? If your settings are to your taste simply save as a profile and save. Why stop shooting, go home and waste time in the computer to do what the camera can do in seconds?
It is nothing more than saving your preferred settings for the situation you are shooting in. Best done when actually using the camera.If you want to change the existing profile, overwrite and save, if you want to retain it for a specific situation save as new. Rename to taste.

As a new Q3 user I agree with you. Get out and shoot. I believe the profile settings are the least understood aspect of the Q3 IMHO. After the shoot where are we? On the computer organizing our files and selects. Have NOT found a good YT video showing creating profiles and saving them.

Because it is so simple… I see a lot of overthinking in this thread. User profiles are around since the M8. You are only saving the camera settings for later use, that is all.
