Can the SL3 be used for IR with a filter?

I’m thinking about picking up an IR filter for my APO Summicron lenses on the SL3.  Does the SL3 have strong IR filtering on the sensor?  I’m not sure if the camera will be useful for this.

No. You would have to send it off to get the filter glued onto the sensor removed, which is a risky process. M8 will do IR. Or buy an already modifiedcamera for this purpose, or buy a camera to send off for modification.

Well, the (unmodified) Leica M11 works just fine with an IR filter such as Schott RG695 (Wratten #89B) or Schott RG715 (Wratten #88A). So I guess it should work with the SL3 as well. Their sensors are not identical but very similar.

Any camera will "work" with an IR filter, some just better than others.  Personally I would not have cause to convert a camera but a dark red filter can approximate RF film in virtually any digital camera.

When testing the original SL (type 601) the sensor was opaque to IR.  Leica wouldn't make that mistake again.  Generalizing to the SL2 and SL3 I would guess they have a very opaque IR filter over the sensor.

But is the filter stack similar?

You're far better off buying an M8 and an B+W 092 or 093 filter on whatever lens you are using (it need not be an expensive Leica lens, a 150 $ Canon LTM 50 will do exceedingly well). The only advantage of an APO lens would be that you don't have to experiment with the focussing.
