But could it replace the need for a 75/90 apo for portraits?

I find the extra stop of the Sigma to be a reason on its own for getting the lens. I don’t always shoot in nicely controlled environments, and it means I can throw a distracting background out of focus quite easily.

It is quite easy to over-use the effect though. If a head is slightly turned away, then one eye can get rather obviously out of focus.

It’s early days, but I think I prefer the bokeh of the Sigma to the Apo-Summicron 75 - it’s less busy, and sharp edges in the background ‘vibrate’ less.

great images! One question-how fast does it focus? I wonder if it could be used for sports?

I haven't used it for sports, but I used it for play rehearsals yesterday afternoon - indoors, fluorescent lighting. I had a small number of slightly missed focuses - about as many, if not more than I normally get with the SVE 24-90 or Apo-Summicron 75 or 90. On the other hand it didn't hunt and was very quick to get to its end point. And it has the immense advantage for me that f/1.4 throws messy backgrounds way out of focus (yesterday it was a gym!).

It's still early days and, as with any camera and lens, I am learning its strengths and weaknesses to exploit or work around - I don't look for perfection in my kit.

A few more with the lens. I hope others are going to post. I don't think I'm the only one here with it.

All with the SL2-S, f/1.4, little or no cropping, or cropped only for aspect ratio.

Headshots for a Greek play - in and out of character. Shot with off-camera flash.

Lovely images Paul, nicely lit.  I had the lens for a while, just found myself reaching for the Sigma 90 2.8 more often for my use so it got sold at some point, (for the CL and the FpL just a better fit), and I have M lenses when I want faster.  Lovely lens though.  I have thought of getting the lens again a few times but so far managed to resist, if portraits were my thing I would struggle a little between it and the 90 APO, I did have both for a while though didn't ever try iAF with either so nothing to add on focus speed, in single spot AF mode don't remember noticing any difference in performance.   We are just spoiled for choice now aren't we 😄

Thanks for the portraits. Somehow, the lux still attracts me more. Can’t say it is the rendering or may be the f/l. I guess the latter.

and I am comparing your portraits with your portraits in the lux thread…

Don’t dare to ask your age 😇

I come from a family in which quite a few have lived to an advanced age. On that basis I took early-ish retirement in the expectation I could build a new career* as long as my first. You can work it out from that!

* That career is happening, as a photographer. It generates income, however, only in the form of enjoyment, chocolate, wine, free tickets and (most recently) a scented candle. And a lot of gratitude, which I like best.

Interesting; I haven't tried that comparison more directly. But tomorrow morning I have some more headshots to take in the series shown in post #11, so will try both lenses in the same conditions.

SL2-S and (first) Sigma 85 and (second) Summilux-SL 50. Little or no cropping. f/1.4, off camera flash.

Taken from different distances to fill the frame, I prefer the 85 to the 50; to my mind the face is subject to a little distortion at 50mm because I have to be close. And from a human point of view, I would prefer not to get this close to the model - it can feel a bit intrusive of the personal space.

The series above were taken in Trinity College Chapel. I took advantage of being there to take some portrait shots of models who have infinite patience and never have a problem posing. Again Sigma 85 first, then Summilux-SL 50. This time, all taken from the same distance. All at f/1/4, ambient light.

And his mates, Macaulay, Tennyson & Whewell. Focus is on the middle one. Sigma 85 first, then Summilux-SL 50. All at f/1/4, ambient light.

Thank you for this.

Not sure why, but I prefer the 50. Which is good (for me), as I just bought the lux. I guess I need to play at least some months with the lux before deciding on another f/l.

I bought the lux for portraits, as it’s rendering will make me stand out from regular images. It’s up to me now to make the best of it.

During my latest sessions, I was either playing with lights and or lenses, and because of that, connecting with the sitter got lost.

For my next - say 50 sessions - technical things should be easy in order to focus on the model: one light with a huge umbrella, one lens (the lux), one camera (sl2). A simple yet great setup. Back to basics.
