3 weeks in Japan with the SL3

Used the SL3 extensively in Japan for a 3 week holiday.  Although my experience with the SL3 was mainly positive, I almost had a nervous breakdown when I thought I lost some photos.   Fortunately, it was merely due to a new setting in the menu called the bloody #$&@?% Group Display Mode !!!

You do not mention it in the review, but your picture count on the CF card seems to indicate that you shot everything in JPG?

Hi Dirk

Thank you and yup, you're right.  For most of the general photography like food, street signs, candids, I only shoot in JPG.   I'll only enable DNG if I'm shooting the sunset or backlit situations which I did on a few occasions while I was in Japan.

I rarely shoot in raw now after realising that each DNG photo is more than 80MB.  I normally shoot in DNG when I'm in the studios or when I need I know I have to edit the photos or if I'm taking photos in challenging lighting conditions.

Those JPGs look good.  Did you shoot them slightly underexposed or use iDR to get the colors to pop a little more?

Hi Dr G

You're good....I do use iDR on all my settings and underexposed 60-70% of my shots by 1/3 stop.  I just adjust them to suit my taste on the Macbook's Photos app.
For all my SL cameras, I normally have a preset for Standard, Macro, Portrait, Studio, Sports and Monochrome and iDR are enabled for all.

Wonderful shots and interesting read, thanks! I'm curious how you carried all those hefty lenses around? When I am 'on tour' I find anything more than the 24-90mm (and/or a couple of primes) to get quite uncomfortable on long city hikes - as a result I rarely take my 90-280mm with me despite the wonderful photographic opportunities it can create.

I'm going on a tour of Scotland this summer and am hesitating about taking the 90-280mm - it will be a perfect environment for it and (unusually for me) we will do most of the travelling by car so it would be less of a burden.

Thank you. Well done. Enjoyable to read with plenty of beautiful photos to match. Like you, I am also interested in the latest CFexpress 4.0 technology. Even if current cameras doesn't fully support, we can still enjoy the potential doubling of transfer speeds to the computer.

I normally don't bring the SL lenses for tour.  As you've rightly put it, the 90-280 and the rest of the SL zooms are pretty heavy.  For the past few trips to Europe,  i brought all my TL zooms instead.  For this trip,  since I brought my doggy stroller,  I actually placed the lenses under her stroller so I don't have to carry it.

Maybe Leica will complete their new range of trinity lenses comprising the SL 14-24, 24-70 & 70-200 F2.8 DG DN which are lighter, cheaper and made in Japan 😀

If you're driving in Scotland, I guess you can bring the 90-280 along and leave it in the car if you don't need it for that day.

Exactly..... that's why I decided to get the V4 cards for the read & write speeds more for the computer even though the SL3 doesn't support it.   Bought two CFE card readers from Amazon: one for the camera bag and one at home.
