I got the grip. At first it seems ridiculously expensive, but over the life of the camera I think it’s worth it. It is certainly more comfortable and the extra battery is a plus. And one session of nice portrait orientation images and it pays for itself. Also, for me, I find it easier to hold the camera with the grip. Without the grip my first impression of the SL3 was that it felt small, unbalanced, and bottom heavy towards the left— like it tilts to the lower left and feels like it may fall out of my hand. Definitely feels more secure with the grip. Happy I got it. For reference I’m coming from the Canon R3 (best feeling camera in hand of any camera I have ever used) and 1DX Mark II both of which had built in grip; and the very small Canon R5 and very heavy battery grip for the R5.

I agree about the R3! I now also ordered the SL3-grip but I am not sure yet if I use it always or just with the bigger lenses.

I am really liking my grip. It’s very functional and feels secure in the hand. Also easy to remove and it seems that the battery in the grip is used first, so not necessary to remove each time you need to charge the batteries. Also can charge both with USB without removing it. So it’s pretty convenient.

Question.

does the plate which opens formthe second battery also tightens a bit loose? I mean is there some tolerance if you press on it?
the grip itself sits very solid. Inshot an sports event yesterday and liked it very much. Even if its a bit on the heavy side.

Hmmm... up to now I didn't buy a grip for my SL2 and SL3 because in "Nikon-Times" I had a bulky and heavy  D4 for wildlife shooting.

But the last weekend I was shooting with the SL3 and the heavy 90-280 outdoor and after that experience I ordered today the grip for reservation 😂. Without grip the SL3 together with a heavy lens like the 90-280 seems not well balanced for me....

Will get the grip tomorrow at the local Leica Store...😎

I agree with you. With the grip the combo feels much better.

Do you mean the door? Mine has a little play in it and I was wondering the same thing. That little section feels a little “loose” but everything is stable and flush.

I put it on when I received it. found oit a lille heavy, mounted it off. Bun then remounted and at lest with bigger lenses its a very good grip for my hands.
the camer+grip with 90280 is as much as I would want to handhold though for a longer time. Add the 2490 in the bag and the bag is quite heavy, but doble and a very flexible combo.

I like it when shooting landscapes in part because of the extra battery.  In colder weather the battery dies more quickly, but in an all day ‘hike’ or ‘outing’ it makes it easy. The vertical v horizontal is nice and it adds some weight for balancing heavier lenses.

I have read several reviews about this grip, said that the in body’s battery always used up first and will need to remove the hand grip to replace that battery, which is quite troublesome. Does it get any changes on new firmware update ? Thanks.

I've only been using the SL3 and the handgrip for 2 days, but I'm having the exact opposite experience. First the battery of the handgrip is used, then that of the camera. But I still have to observe a bit. I then charge the battery of the handgrip in the charger of my Q2
In any case, the beast is very thirsty. I have ordered a 3rd battery.

I've had the same experience with the SL2-S and its handgrip. It runs the grip batt down to two bars, and then starts drawing on the in-camera batt. I *think* it is caused by a goof in FW 6.0 - I also upgraded my SL to its latest FW version at the same time, and it behaves normally (uses up the grip batt before starting on the in-camera batt). I reported it to Leica, and they're looking at it.

I have the handgrip + the leather strap for more than a month and I have used it extensively on safari with big lenses (sorry guys, not only Leica glasses).

2 advantages:

  1. very well balanced with heavy lenses
  2. autonomy is now almost a day (with 2 batteries)

and I confirm, it uses the grip battery before the one in the camera.

For all the cameras I've had, I've always used the vertical grip. Now, in possession of SL2 I wonder how to charge the internal battery. Is it possible without disassembling the grip every time? Thank you. Lucian

I got one (for sl2) in a 'mint' condition on ebay....but it smells!

Seller tells me that 'smell' is not considered while depicting item condition...gosh!

It stinks like fungus/mold(?)

Did anyone notice on theirs any particular 'industrial' smell coming off grip's rubbery cover?...that in my case  got 'magnified' by seller keeping that unit in a poorly temp/humidity controlled location
