I absolutely wish to see these photos that 5d MkIV cannot do but M11-P can! Please share them with us. I am sincerely interested in this M11 effect. Really not wanting to sound cocky or like a troll, I just wish to see the mojo that M11-P has (I do not own one) and others do not.

I think you may have read that the wrong way round.

Indeed Flash, If I'm taking pictures of cricket or football (ie actual football not american rugby) with a long lens I'm using a canon 5dmkiv (as that's what I have, other SLR's/mirrorless cameras with autofocus are available).

For artsy fartsy photograph/portraits I'm using my M11 (much less intimidating than a 5d)

For parties/nights out, where I may have had a drink, other than the first hour I'm likely to get better shots with my X100vi!

I already love my new M11-P.

I received it 3 weeks ago. It is very fresh, then. This is my second digital M after the M-P typ 240 that I kept almost 9 years*, but I had the M6 (1988) and a MP (2003). I traded both M6 and M-P 240 to buy the M11-P.

* I kept this digital body an exceptional long time; good IQ, reliable, low-profile with M mount lenses.

I know there has been quite a lot of M11-bashing. My experience is yet limited, but files are sooooo good, with such a lot of dynamic range, that I may forgive some « impurities » of the software design. I am not pro either, so my expectations may be more tolerant than others.

I use it mainly with my M lenses; I do like it a lot, but IQ apart, the experience is very similar to other M bodies I had the privilege to use. Nevertheless, the integration of the Leica grip and the very good Visoflex 2 makes its ergonomy very good with R lenses. I feel it is a lot better than it was on the M-P 240. I shot macro today with the Macro-Elmarit-R 60 and landscape with Vario-Elmar-R 1:4/35-70, and I enjoyed it. I considere it may be the true successor of the R9 with digital back, although it’s been a value proposition of the M-P 240 (never tried the M10x, though, but having SL2).

Yes. I already love my new M11-P.

Just to illustrate what I said in the previous #26 post :

M11-P with 21 SEM and external 21 mm viewfinder, aside my beloved 2003 MP with tiny Summarit-M 1:2.5/50 and 12585 lens-hood.

A M is a M 😉

M11-P with grip, Visoflex 2 and adapted Vario-Elmar-R 1:4/35-70 (high performing but not very expensive, by the way), aside 1992 R-E with Summicron-R 1:2/50.

I may agree that the zoom on the M11-P is not the best compactness illustration vs. R-E with tiny 50, but it is showing that it is smaller (indeed 300g lighter) than R-adapted lens on my SL2 and not a lot bigger than R3 to R7 bodies. M11 is a light and very good digital solution for manual R zooms like mine, or for longer then 135 mm fixed focal lenses. If I need a fixed length shorter than 135 mm, then I will fit any of my M-mounted lens.

Then, bigger benefit of SL2 would be again AF with some Leica L glass, whose rendering on landscapes is reaching some medium format one.

Regards,

Stef.

This R-E picture reminds me of my dear old R4s. I wish current SL series had kept the same size but i doubt this will ever happen 😕

Fully agree. I owned an R5 which I sold because of digital mermaids. I always regretted it, so I bought this second hand R-E for color films. I use my MP for B&W ones.

I do not foresee the digital SL evolution toward this compactness. Firstly, it would compete with digital M, secondly, there is a lot of stuff to enter in the body because of AF, IBIS, enough energy capacity, weather sealing with inner heat management, etc, and finally because such compactness would not allow proper handling because of lenses weight. Just look at Sony bodies 🙃

But, coming back to the subject, M11 with grip, adapted R lenses and Visoflex 2 is really the « digital R » to me, far better than my recently sold M-P 240 with the  « already outaged at launch » EVF2 (I never tested M10 with Visoflex, though).

As my conclusion about M11 use :

  1. any fixed focal below 135 : M lenses, whatever very old (1966 Tele-Elmar 135) or rather new (2017 Summilux 28).
  2. any zoom lens or fixed focal above 180 : R lenses with 24025 grip and Visoflex 2.

Allowing to use efficiently and digitally all my M and R lenses makes me saying :

« I already love my M11-P. »

I agree... I was surprised by the size of the digi SL the first time I saw it. It looks like a medium format camera compared to something like an R7 or a R6.2.
Heck, I'd settle for something the size of the old Leicaflex SL, but regardless I'm not ready to jump in on an EVF camera at this point.

Both my M11 and Sony A7r2 mod work fine with M lenses but i should use more my R lenses admittedly.

I must admit from time to time I think back to when I owned 25 R lenses and of all of them the 180 f2 was the one I now want to try on my SL3. And just think it was an APO design, but that brought weight and a lot of weight since it was around 5 lbs if I recall.

The depth of field must have been challenging wide open.  I have the APO Elmarit-R 180/2.8, and I wouldn’t want it bigger!

The joy I get from shooting the M11P is unmatched by any other camera I've had so far ...

Yes... I WAS in 100% agreement with that sentiment... & then my Hasselblad 907X CFV100 arrived. That, is the BEST camera I have ever owned/used.  The image quality is beyond exceptional.  I was not expecting this and I love it. The M11P still has a place in my workflow but it is now in P#2.
