Would you like a digital MP like this?

I can live without the LCD but I doubt many other won't like it ... perhaps Leica can make a flip out LCD, you can have the ISO dial when it's closed and turn on the LCD when flipping out.

This draft looks pretty cool ... good work!

I'd buy it. Lose the rear screen and the built in motor of the M8. MP style metering would be perfect. Frame lines for 24x36. I understand it wouldn't be usable with really wide lenses, but that's OK - I can use the M8 for that. I'd want a digital MP for a 35mm lens and that's pretty much it. Maybe a 75 or 90 on occasion.

except the direct access to ISO setting and the possibility to delay the shutter cocking..

not having a screen just sounds like a non sense to me.... and making the camera 1.5 or twice the size by adding motor or screen sounds plainly stupid to me.

why don't you keep your MP and buy a good scanner?

Why do you want to go digital if you do not take advantage of digital technology apart from a sensor instead of a film.....????

"Featuring classic M3 style top plate larger viewfinder (0.75x)"

The M3 is 0.91x. A 0.75x viewfinder would be close to the wide 0.72x VF of classical m2/m4/m6/m7 bodies.

The only 'digital M3' is and will probably remain the Epson R-D1 (and R-D1s) with its 1:1 viewfinder.

Leica cannot compete i'm afraid because a 1:1 VF would imply a larger finder window which could not fit the goggles of some special lenses like 35/1.4, 35/2, 35/2.8, 90/4 or 135/2.8.

Nope,

I like all the features of the M8 right now, including the LCD.

The big benefit with digital is the ability to check your images after you shoot them. Why would you want to loose that benefit? If you don't want to see them, simply disable the function.

The only thing I would change if I could would be the sound of the shutter. I would make it as close to silent as possible. Of course, the IR issue, the ISO issue, and the WB issue too.

my 2 cents

Nice idea... but I think that renouncing to LCD is a hard move, and the proposed add-on is too bulky ... why not a credit card size add-on LCD to be inserted when one likes (and connected...):

- Over the back

- At the left or right side

- At the bottom (angled ?)

... and the sensor could be anyway 18x27 ... I'd expect too many issues with the present WAs...

Wow! Thanks for all your replies.

To egibaud:

Yes, I have a film scanner, Nikon VED. The results are simply great.

But, the reason I want digital in that MP is mostly about "turn around time", or "lead time", i.e. time it takes from the moment you take the picture to the moment you see the result properly (LCD playback won't satisfactory). The digital MP in this concept would deliver the in about a day, to view on a good screen or print on paper. Whereas films will take about a week. Time would have emotional effects here, at least to me.

About missing the LCD, it's really a compromise. In my view there are two concerns about this:

1. total thickness of the body, I did try to "fit" a swivel screen onto the back of the camera. It is just to thick, and doesn't look nice. The hinge it required could be difficult to manufacture.

2. yes, stnolan, without the LCD screen at the back means it could be simply a metal plate at the back. This would allow us to carry it like your film Ms and not to worry about any impact towards the back.

About the "Cartridge M":

Well, just an option for ppl who really can't live without a screen. The unit can be used independently for viewing and managing images (think of it as a multimedia storage like Epson P-4000), as well as attached to the main body. It will be able to record images directly. There are a few different configurations according to one's need.

well it's all about taste and way of working with a camera.

I am happy with the M8, I just wish they could fix some issues, but not make a new revolution.

I would also be surprised that Leica would make this kind of MP, surely not without screen the market would be even more limited and I could hardly see customers from other brand jump onto the Leica wagon with a digital MP instead of an M8.

Anyway what I do NOT criticize at all is the design work you have done, good work!
