Another challenging Birds in Flight session with the SL3. This time with the Sigma 500 f/5.6. Black-Necked Stilts in flight are difficult subjects to be sure, but the struggle is real. AFc and Wildlife profile was much more reliable and accurate when the stilts were wading or walking. Colors are nice. Cropping ability, too. Regarding ISO, however, I don’t understand how others are praising the high ISO performance. I think the files look like rubbish at 3200. Couldn’t imagine going above that. For my next session I will cap auto ISO at 2000.

Wow. these images make me want to get a 500/5.6. Great photographs, and I find brilliant IQ as well. Did you do a lot of post processing? How do you like the lens?

Thank you. I like the lens a lot. It’s a rental and yesterday was my first time photographing with it. It must be said that the size is simply astonishing. It’s only slightly longer than the LENS HOOD! Of my Canon RF 600. So far, I am impressed with the lens. I really like how it renders background and separation of subject. Very little post processing done in these images. Just the basic tone, contrast, exposure, highlights, shadows. No sharpening done at all. I did use Lightroom DeNoise on a few of the images— anything shot at ISO 3200. I’ll use the lens more this weekend and should have a better idea about it afterwards. But my plan now is to sell my Canon 600 f/4. I think the Sigma and SL3 can be that good for my primary use cases. Thanks again! Have a great weekend.

Aloha,

Lee

What a great lens. It's a pity about the tyre tracks, unavoidable unless you the first on the beach. You could attempt a fix in PS? with filter>Noise>dust and scratches- fiddle with sliders and mask onto sand?

Aaah, yes is a pity about the tire tracks but I’m not bothered. It reveals a little local culture. It’s a State Park on the far west side of the island and fairly remote. Locals like to drive in the sand here (tourists too). I wish they wouldn’t but they do. Fishermen or campers will often drive on the beach to be close to their fishing pole or day camp.
The lens is wonderful. Truly special. Wonder how I would like the 35. 🤔😀

Yep, it doesn't matter at all. I know a guy who stores a rake in his overlander for the many times he photographs sand dunes. I wouldn't be that guy. It's about what's there in the scene "now", reflecting nature and man made. I do tend to remove things from my images to simplify the composition when needed. I was amazed how well the dust and scratches thing worked. Yes the 35 is the great; same but the 21 has more! The 35 is unreal and for what I do, the 35 SL apo really adds to that style.

Best
