Stopped by the Leica Store Boston today, they thankfully had the camera available to try out.

Very impressed with the colors, better than the SL2 for skin I think.

Leica 75mm F2.

Nothing special, but my first wildlife shot with the SL3. A female roedeer. SL3 with APO Telyt R 280/4 plus 1.4x TC. 160/sec with ISO 4000.

I really like that animal detection also works with manual focus. You see a frame around the animal(s). When you press the joystick the detected animal gets magnified, but not the eyes (yet). Animal detection is still a beta function.

Thank you for this interesting precision.

Does this detection of the animal, the frame around the animal & the fact of magnifying via the joystick only work with Leica adapters?

Do you think it works with adapters from other brands (Novoflex) and/or lenses without Rom (Leica R) and/or without 6 bit encoding (Leica M)?

Animal AF is in beta but works quite well. It is shot with the 90-280mill and is heavily cropped. I took pictures from the kitchen window to look at the functioning.

Skin tones look pretty good, actually. Is this AWB? His lips show a believable red, and so does the greenish-bluish tint of his five-o'clock shadow. It would be nice to see other people's skin tones besides him. Leica's strength always was keeping one's individual complexion rather than making one look healthy (I'm pointing at you, Canon).

Shadow recovery looks very, very good. Here a quick one; I first lifted the file by 5 stops (in Lightroom), followed by full shadow recovery. The darkest regions looked quite good, without artefacts that one 'typically' see/expect. If this holds in general, SL3 is the most robust low-light body I have used. SL3 with SL21APO, ISO100, f2, 12 sec shutter speed & heavily underexposed, lifted in post. A quicky, for test.

I wonder if 5 stops of exposure adjustment and full shadow recovery of ISO 100 files generates a bit of an over-the-top HDR look with this 60 MP BSI sensor. Not obvious in your picture but I’ve seen it before in Sony cameras.

Could very well be. And I never apply such aggressive adjustments in post. But it is good that banding and other artefacts don't show up (at least based on initial testing). Noise is clearly present, but it doesn't ruin the photo, its sort of please t to look at (for my eyes). For comparison, I use a Canon R5 for action; here I have an impression that Canon apply some sort of noise filtering in camera, yielding somewhat plastic apparence when files are lifted, or at high ISO. Anyway, despite early days and far to soon to conclude, the SL3 files look good and they are quite malleable.

I went to the SL3 launch event at Leica Tokyo, and tried it out with my old 90mm Elmarit-M. Once I had worked out how to set it up in the menu, focusing was a doddle, though I remain disappointed that magnification isn't automatic without a button push. Since this option is available on my Nikon Z6, I'm amazed it's not possible with the SL series, or am I missing something? The Leica staff couldn't do it, despite spending several minutes trying. Nevertheless, not a bad bit of kit, and seems noticeably more compact than the original SL.

SL3 + 90 Elmarit-M f2.8

Skin tones and colors look really nice. They are finally getting the hang of it for FF cameras. They come close to S3 now is my  impression.

I thought this only worked with lenses that have electronic contacts on Nikon (or Leica SL). M lenses don't have any such contacts, so they can't tell the camera that you've moved the focus ring.

Actually, I think you're correct on this. I'll have to go check my Nikon to see whether it works.

I have to check it again. I don't have the right lens with me. Maybe it was just a coincidence and and the af point was at the same space. nodrog wrote above, it is not working...  Indeed it didn't work with the Summilux and my kids.
