Hi everybody

I'm still trying to figure out if i want to go with a "voigtlander nokton f1.5 ASPH Type I" OR the "35mm ultron f2 ASPH type II VM"

I was going to grab a 35mm summilux FLE v1 but i do love the idea of the voigtlanders as some have nice characteristics and of course saving 2k

Besides the size of lens and f stop, what is the difference between them?

I seem to have had a slightly sub-par (optically) copy of the Ultron 35mm ASPH II (chrome brass) Since selling it, I've seen enough DNG file samples to determine that it is a very good lens optically, so much so I'm considering repurchasing it or the Nokton 35mm f/1.5 ASPH.

I came from a Summicron-M 35mm ASPH II, and the 35 Ultron I had was superior in every way except for build and handling.

Probably the biggest issue I had and one that keeps me undecided on a repurchase, is The 35mm Ultron ASPH lenses had various reports for uneven focus stiffness and minor binding. Especially when focusing in the vertical shooting orientation. Mine had it too, but it mostly went away after I took it apart and re-greased it with a lighter grease. The Ultron 35mm ASPH build feels behind that of the Ultron 28mm ASPH, which is what I replaced it with. That 28mm Ultron, as well as the Nokton 35mm 1.5 ASPH, simply feels nicer to use. I also never liked the winged aperture of the Ultron 35mm asph.

Voigltander lenses have quite some light fall off. The differences between f/2 and f/2.8 with the Ultrons (35mm and 28mm) is a very centralised change in brightness. Unlike Leica, the Voigtlander lenses vignette more. The Nokton 35mm 1.5 ASPH II also has a strong vignette.

The Ultron 35mm ASPH II also has a busier and harsher OOF rendering than the Nokton 35mm f/1.5 ASPH. Not to everybody's taste. The Ultron OOF rendering bares more resemblance to the Summilux-M 35mm ASPH FLE than the Nokton would.

Personally, I'm more inclined to go for the Nokton 35mm f/1.5 APSH over the Ultron 35mm ASPH. But if I were able to buy an Ultron with a good return policy (not an option where I am) then I would try the Ultron 35mm first.

Awesome! thanks for taking your time

I think ill just grab the 35mm nokton 1.5 on amazon!  it has 30 day return policy and also i love the fact it comes in a matte black aluminum finish. Love the separation and bokeh on it a lot from what ive seen

Hello, I owned the Voigtlander 35mm 1.5 VMII for the last 4 months , I don't pixel peep at 400% but I would say image quality is very good.

Build quality is good, if I have to nitpick it can happen to focus unintentionally at 0.5m as there is no click or resistance on the focusing ring to remind you when reaching the rangefinder coupling 0.7m limit, also the lens hood doesn't come with the lens but must be bought separately.

Overall I believe is a good lens and definitely an excellent value for the money.

I can't seem to recall the type numbers sorry but i use both Ultron 35/2 asph and Nokton 35/1.5 asph on Leica and Sony bodies. In a nutshell, the Ultron 35/2 asph is a sort of compact Summicron 35/2 asph with modern rendition and busier bokeh while the Nokton 35/1.5 asph is a kind of compact Summilux 35/1.4 asph with gentler rendition and smoother bokeh than the Ultron's. As far as sharpness is concerned, both lenses ave very good but they are both rather mediocre as regards color fringing. I keep them for compactness on digital CL mainly but in my short experience (got the Nokton 2 days ago) none of them can compete with their Leica counterparts. Now, subjectively, i'm using the Nokton on my M11 currently and it is a pleasure to use compared to the bulkier and heavier Summilux. 0.5m MFD is another advantage of the Nokton for LV users. FWIW.

voigtlander nokton classic 35mm f1.5 ASPH type 1 is nice lens to have, it's small and compact enough (for me) same as leica summicron 35mm F2 size, but have the F1.5 aperture speed that if you need to use in lowlight situation. And also it renders nice wide open if you nailed the focus. If you close down the aperture F5.6 to F11 it's so sharp. It's my first M mount lens, I tried the leica summilux 35mm F1.4 Asph FLE at leica store, I didn't noticed that much difference between the two. For me, it is nice lens. Always on my leica m11 from the time I bought it. Happy shooting 👍📸

I had the 35mm/1.5 Nokton I and was disappointed in its edge and corner resolution even stopped down. I now have the Voigtländer 35mm/2 Apo Lanthar, which is far better optically, though larger. The 35mm Apo is sharp at all apertures, has nice bokeh, very low longitudinal color error, but does have slight focus shift at some apertures (using the EVF helps overcome this).

May i ask if you have images showing this? I don't shoot sharp edges or corners usually but i can get results like this easily (M11, VM 35/1.5 asph, f/2).

How are you getting on with the lens? I have that version and can’t fault it! I’ve never had another 35mm though so I have nothing to compare it to.

Great.  My 35mm 1.5 type 1 is superb!  Can't beat the price and value combo.  Size, look on my M10M is simply perfect.  Enjoy!

[...] Right now, my only usable M-lens is the Nokton 35mm f/1.4 Classic II.
It is tack sharp. My only question is about the view finder frame which is quite a bit too generous and seems more like 28mm than 35mm. [...]

If you mean in the OVF, the Nokton 35/1.4 is supposed to bring up the same 35mm frame lines as the Nokton 35/1.5 and other 35mm M-mount lenses. You may wish to check it with the Image Field Selector (14).
