It's March 6th. Tomorrow, the SL2 will be useless, outdated garbage...

Recommended Posts

I am amazed given the updated models that my SL and for that matter my M240 continue to take excellent images that in most circumstances are not discernible from their later models.

A lot can be said for "buy one skip one" or two or three.

I said exactly the same thing when I got the SL2 in Jan 2020.  Told myself that the SL2 will be the very last camera I would ever buy!!
Ended up buying the Q2 in 2021 and the CL and SL2-S Reporter in 2022.  And I just bought the SL3 on 1 Mar........

Maybe the SL3 will be my LAST CAMERA!!!!!

Love your silver SL2 by the way......😉

I will remind myself that my goal is to take pictures - good ones. To become a better photographer. And that the only thing that helps me in this regard is putting in the work. It is never because of a new model of camera.

Reads like some mantra from a 12 step program for GAS.

The SL2 will be useless. I urge everyone to sell his/her one and buy the SL3. This will be good for Leica and the L-mount alliance. Meanwhile it will push the second hand market down, which will good for me… 😎

I dunno.  I expect that the SL3 will have that lovely 60 MPx sensor!  HARD TO RESIST THAT.  AND MY SL2 WOULD ONLY HAVE FETCHED 3K LAST MONTH SO I've kept it.

But: will those extra megapixels make our pictures better?

Haven't seen any evidence of that in the M11 or Q3 threads.

Anyway - enjoy it either way!

With respect to noise at ISO 3200 and above, the SL2 was useless, outdated garbage the moment the SL2-S came out. See post #4 and beyond in this thread. Tom includes the SL in the comparisons, too. The SL3 will trounce the SL2 at high ISO and for ‘push-ability’ of shadows in high contrast scenes at ISO 640 and above.

Wish I had read this post three years ago. I would’ve stopped taking pictures with my SL2 on the street & instead focused on super clean portraits of family pets and parked cars. to think of all the shadow detail I’ve missed…

The SL2-S is a different tool that works better for some jobs, not all. To state the obvious.

I won't be one of those people. I will go out with my treasured, chipped black SL2 (or maybe the silber one I just got) and take pictures with it. I'll stay off YouTube, ignore the influencer shills and their 4K promotional videos.

I see that you are taking the therapy sessions seriously!

If it reflects M10 trends, the price went down when M11 came out, and now that everyone has the M11 and M10 is harder to get, the price is going back up...

Even the Q2 suffered from this - but I wouldn't say the SL2 was useless.  Some of my best black and white images were made with the SL2 and the APO Summicron-SL lenses.  I'm a low light shooter, so the SL2-S was great for the past few years.  When I had the Q3 (not a 28mm fan) I found that low light performance was really good.  Maybe not up to the level of the SL2-S, but still great.  I still sold my "useless" SL2 a few years back, but I'm looking forward to the SL3.  I'll probably keep the SL2-S, though.

You told me therapy doesn’t work, you’re still buying lingerie for chickens! 🐔

M10 prices aren’t going up from any indication I’ve seen. Used M11 prices are in the toilet though.

+1 for upgrade my skills.

+1 for picking up ad hoc paid assignments (am not pro and have a day job) that lowers my used SL2 price paid even further to almost nothing.

Sorry no upgrades. Don’t and never need the latest for the pictures i take. I take decent pictures but far from the best i have seen, some taken by Canon 7Dmk3 and kit lens that gave me a jaw drop. These great photographers take good pictures. Their equipment costs is far from even one 50 APO SL. when i look at such photos by highly skilled photographers in their genre, it is laughable people in this forum doing splitting hair talk about 50 APO SL image quality below that of 35 APO SL and own a myriad costing an arm and leg. It is laughable that my SL2 and 50 APO M photo cannot compare to someone’s great photo taken with a Canon 50 f1.8.

It’s the person.

......to some people. There will be tons of gently used SL2 camera posted on the forums, the sale price racing to the bottom. Buy mine! NO, buy mine - look at all these great accessories I'm including! No, buy mine - got it for 7K in November, yours for only 3K today!

I won't be one of those people. I will go out with my treasured, chipped black SL2 (or maybe the silber one I just got) and take pictures with it. I'll stay off YouTube, ignore the influencer shills and their 4K promotional videos. If I go on Instagram, it will be to post pictures I take with my SL2, not to look at unboxing videos. All day long, I'll remind myself how my SL2 has never frozen once since I bought it at launch (OK, once when I inserted the SD card incorrectly), how I've taken tens of thousands of images with it, never missed not having a flip screen, or PDAF, 100 grams of less weight or an extra dial on the body.

I will remind myself that my goal is to take pictures - good ones. To become a better photographer. And that the only thing that helps me in this regard is putting in the work. It is never because of a new model of camera.

The camera is not the main limitation. I am. So I'm going to....keep upgrading myself!

So, enjoy your new cameras, people! Looking forward to seeing your pictures, AND your complaints about issues that need to be addressed in an upcoming firmware update 😂

I just picked up a new in box silver SL2 for a good price yesterday. The time was right, it's a mature product, still on firmware 5.1 as well.     I thought about the SL3 but didn't see the benefit for the way I plan to use the camera. If I was wanting to use autofocus lenses with it at all, I would have gone for the SL3. Seems like a no-brainer to go with the SL3 if autofocus is part of your workflow and the budget is there.

I'm with you on the reliability issues - I do wonder if SL3 users will suffer corrupt DNG files and freezes like some in the M11 crowd. Leica desperately needs to sort out their firmware issues.
