How can one validate that the Q3 itself is not a knockoff? That is a bigger concern, isn’t it?

Try the camera for a few days and see if it has any bugs or annoyances.

If it doesn't then it's a knockoff.

Received the MotoQueen and it seems like it is a dead ringer for the official. I'm almost leaning towards it being an Amazon mixup with the real ones getting shipped in place of the knockoff. I'd have to see them side by side, but the box is official looking with a hologram and Leica logo, with it saying it's made in Portugal. Mine even came with a Leica branded two pack of screen protectors.

The thumb grip itself seems larger than it needs to be for my purposes, but the extra throw on both function buttons makes fn2 especially much more tactile. Also my concern about the exposure compensation dial being out of the way or awkward to each with the thumb rest in place is unfounded, it works great.

One warning I've found when wearing my Q3 with the MotoQueen thumb support. It's just loose enough in the hot shoe that if it gets bumped dangling at my side, the thumb support can be knocked out of place. Luckily I noticed before it fell out completely! I've secured it with some gaffers tape but I would advise testing how tight it is in your hot shoe, lest you risk losing it at an inopportune moment.

Thanks for the heads up - I just checked my q3 > motoqueen 'connection - it's solid - no play - I'll keep an eye out in case it starts to wiggle with more use. again - thanks - btw - i just got an email from B&H - as of that email - earlier today - they just received the official Leica thumb grip in black and it's iin stock - of course that could change quickly. I'll do another post so more people can see the notice.

To be clear, it didn't feel like there was any play in mine whatsoever either, but when moving around all day shooting, I found the grip in two different situations partly slipping off. I'm sure it bumped against my body in a specific direction to cause it to move. I don't think it feels especially wiggly, but tightening it up gas definitely made it feel rock solid now.

I got a Q3 last week along with a few "do-dads" to get it ready to use.  I looked around for a Leica Thumb Support and found one.  I placed the order for it on Monday, June 24.  I had the shipping notice the next day with estimated delivery on Friday, the 28th.  Friday came and went as did Saturday and Sunday.  After an inquiry, I got this:

Well, dang.  After another search, I found a couple in brass but that didn't appeal.  Finally, I looked on Amazon and came across the MOTOQUEEN piece.  I ordered it yesterday afternoon and it was on my doorstep by 6:00 AM this morning.  I was surprised to see see the Leica branding and Made in Portugal on the piece.  Fit and finish is perfect.  The buttons function well and the camera is definitely more secure in my old hands.

My Q3 arrives today and I ordered a generic thumb support from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CKH5BX2S?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details) for $100.

This is what arrived.

I ordered from the same vendor (on Amazon) several months ago. My grip did not have the 'made in Portugal' engraving - I think it says it "Made in Germany. The grip I received looks great, fits great, and works great. I purchased it when Leica was back ordered on the black OEM grip. Initially, I would have liked to have the original OEM, but at the end of the day, I didn't want to wait. It looks like it's still out of stock. Sure, there are quite a few opinions about buying OEM vs Chinese knockoffs. I'm a sellout as long as the product is not misrepresented and the quality is equal to or better. It's not that I love sending money to Chinese entities - and I won't live or die if I donate an extra 150.00 or so to Leica (the incremental price of the OEM) - but it's not like the money is going to an American co (I live in the US) - so either way I'm exporting dollars to a foreign country.

There is no way of denying it: Everybody who buys these knockoffs supports the exploitative working conditions in the Chinese counterfeiting industry and damages the Leica brand. How one can still celebrate that here is beyond me.

I'm not sure anyone is "celebrating" their purchase as much as sharing (as many forums tend to be all about sharing - sometimes for confirmation of choice, sometimes to turn people onto something, sometimes to share a caution, etc). I'm not sure if Leica has a patent on the grip. If not - then the counterfeiting accusation is a bit extreme. Copying may be more appropriate. I agree that engraving "Leica" is a bit of a misrepresentation/trademark infringement. The Chinese working at these companies might not have any jobs and no income without these 'exploitive' jobs. Of course, the Chinese have been accused of child labor, which is abhorrent under any circumstances. And working conditions are supposed to be substandard in many factories - even Foxconn, where, among other products, iPhones are assembled (and I'm not ready to give up my iPhone). Some improvements have been made since the stories came out years ago, but the exploitation remains. Indeed, this is an issue more for the Chinese than for the rest of the world - UNLESS - all nations join in enforcing all the applicable laws broken in that country (labor laws as defined in Western countries). - As for damaging the Leica brand. In this particular case, I'm unsure how much damage is being done. When I mentioned these to two different Leica store reps - they were underwhelmed by the news. Certainly not as aggressive as LVHM police would be. I applaud your steadfast support for the brand's integrity and the vilification of Chinese labor laws (or lack thereof). You are more moral than me. I decided to get the knockoff, report it to Leica, and move on. Cheers

I want to know how you are certain it is counterfeit or Chinese. Your constant moaning about it is tiresome.

Oh, I would have thought that a "knock-off" would show up when one registered one's camera with Leica

I should add that on a trip to Beijing, once there I realised that I had left my iPhone charger behind. I walked out of the hotel in to a fancy mall on Wangfujing, and went into the first electronics store. A Chinese sales person showed me two identical pieces (boxes, documentation, etc); one was for USD 10 and the other for USD 40.

I asked about the difference between the two. In perfect English, the lady answered: one has made the round trip to the US, the other hasn't. Of course I bought the one less travelled! It worked perfectly

Well, well, a UPS sleuth found my now well traveled Leica thumb support!  The box was a bit tattered but the product was just fine:

Leica shouldnt sell them at such an inflated price: it is just asking for knock offs!

It's has wider implications than the FTC jurisdiction. It's a global problem that needs addressing globally, not just in the US and not just by Amazon.

The best course would be for Leica to have a rethink over its profit margins. For example the Native Union wireless charger with the addition of a Leica logo sells for a multiple of what Native Union sells its identical one without the Leica logo– this can only send prospective buyers to Native Union.

As for the thumb grip, Ali Express  offers a choice, presumably in terms of quality variation. The better ones come in Leica packing with Leica markings and documents, and Made in Portugal duly stamped.

Here's a new one I found on the Leicarumors site.  I like it!  Doesn't block any buttons, and stows out of the way when you don't need it.
