I just got my RRS L bracket for the Q3 and it is every bit as good as the other L brackets I have used over the years for my assorted Nikons and the Q2.  Well built and designed.  Melts in my hand.  Does not interfere with the tilt screen and all access ports are easily accessible.  They notched out the side a bit for easier access to the SD card vs the Q2 bracket, but still tight for my fat fingers so I still need to have a small piece of tape attached to the card to grab it.  If you want an L bracket for quick vertical/horizontal switching and also for a very comfortable and secure grip, you should consider this one.  I guess it is still the only game in town.   And I have no affiliation to RRS other than years of using their products from my Nikon D7000 days.

Some not-so-great photos as the only other camera I have access to right now is a small Sony P/S, but you can get the idea.

The JJC bracket has a larger cut out for fingers. It is manageable, though still not perfect for my large hands. (NB: the JJC does not have an Arca Swiss release plate on the side.)

Just got mine yesterday - looks brilliant but it had no fixing screw so can't try it out yet - excited to try it when the screw arrives though. RRS support seems really excellent. Also appreciate the QD connector that's included on these.

OP - how do you find the "grip" portion of the RRS L bracket?  It looks short to me.

Just got a new Q3 yesterday, and looking at either or both thumb and hand grips.  JJC seems to get good reviews, as well as IDS.   The Small Rig grip almost comes flush to the top of the camera.  Prefer Arca Swiss compatibility, versus wireless charging with the Leica grip.

Thank you

I must say that I am confused. People buy a camera for its compactness and then start adding stuff to make it look and feel like a DSLR…

Yeah I don't get this either.

I quess we just live in a world where adding bling is what counts.

I really wonder what percentage of Q owners use their camera for studio-type portraits on a tripod and similar. Or even, how many use it on a tripod, period.

enough that RRS makes a plate for the Q cameras

OK. So you will buy all accessories on the market without checking whether they fit your purpose? RRS makes loads of stuff that most photographers don’t need. Anyway, an L frame is so modest… Q owners really need something like this to impress hoi polloi.

I found my Q2 a little slippery in my hands and ended up with RRS L-Bracket.  The JJC plate that I added to my Q3 added the security of a grip without the "mass".  The Arca Swiss  bottom plate is a bonus.

I tend to agree with that. Although I do like the idea of an Arca Swiss-friendly base plate, though maybe without the hand grip. My third party thumb grip is pretty much all I need.

Hi Dave.  I have been using RRS L brackets for years on many different cameras.  Nikons and now Q.  Since I have nothing else to compare them to as being "short" I am not sure how to answer that other than they work fine for my hand.  Everyone's hands are different so it will either work for you or not.

And to those recent comments about why use such a grip on a small camera, that is your prerogative.  I have my needs and you have yours.  I shake a lot so built in image stabilization is practically worthless for me unless I keep the shutter speeds above 1/250 or so, which of course limits any creative use longer exposures can give to the overall exposure criterion. I love shooting things like waterfalls at slow shutter speeds.  A tripod is needed for me and I also love to switch between landscape and portrait mode a lot, so the L bracket is perfect for my needs. If the shoe does not fit you, then obviously don't use it.  It is still lighter and more compact than my DSLR or now mirrorless and meets my needs for maybe 50% of my photos.

RRS makes very high quality products. Their grip is functionally superior to the one offered by Leica at a competitive price. It makes the camera easier to hold more securely, easy access to the battery & memory unlike the Leica grip, and you can mount it both vertically and horizontally on a tripod. And it’s light.

Just because others use their tools differently than you doesn’t mean they should be ridiculed. Some of us actually use these tools.

It can still be relatively compact with a grip.  I have gigantic hands and the Q series has always been difficult to hold comfortably.  Q series with a grip and a thumbrest still takes up less real esatate in the bag than my SL3 with an equivalent APO SL lens.

I just don't like 28mm.  I wonder if they'll release a Q with a tighter lens (that's sarcasm - I've been following the other thread).

I just received RRS L bracket and pleased with it. Gives camera an industrial look. Below comments.

PROs

Fits perfect with easy access to battery, SD card and side connectors

Light

Horizontal & Vertical Arca Swiss

Flip screen easy access when fitted

CONs

Grip a bit slippery, as smooth as camera top plate

Finger cut out needs getting used to, prefer without. TBH I don’t need the grip only use it for arca swiss mounting
