I’ll be interested to see your results. In real life it is not much of an issue. I like to operate the camera in silent mode in the presence of wildlife —and of people taking videos 😉 anyway. It is the first time that I saw this particular distortion.

Hope you don't mind but I'm rather enjoying my rabbit hole I've dug.

Still playing with the SL3 but I will get the S5II out in the next day or two. I did some shooting with the 150-600 today. Below is a sided by side shot. One frame ES and the other MS. IBIS and OIS off. tripod mounted but fired with me holding the camera. I think I get better results than the 12 second timer?? Also shot on a gimbal. Same results.

As of now I'm getting the same results at 1/f or faster. Below that I do see a difference in ES vs MS, with the SL3 although it's slight. At wider settings I can go even slower. About 1/2f at 150mm. If I have IBIS on I get worse results with the mechanical shutter and about the same with ES. I have no idea why but it's consistent. With OIS it's better and about the same as below. Right now I can't recommend IBIS on a tripod or gimbal for the SL3 but it's great hand held.

I can never use a tripod. Bean bag or tree branch ar best. Did Leica a change the shutter on the SL3?  I found the effect on the SL and CL and Michali on the SL2S. I never went back for the S5 and S5Ii. I just always use ES for the lens.
Did you manage to replicate the distortion ?

Yes the SL3 shutter is new.

I can't replicate the distortion with the SL3. Will try tomorrow with the S5II.

I also shoot primarily handheld but I used all three (geared head, gimbal and handheld) to make sure I could get consistent repeatable results. Don't need my coffee riddled brain affecting the testing. I'm pretty happy to say that at 1/f shutter shock isn't a thing on the SL3. Better with some lenses. Again, I'll have a play with my S5II tomorrow.

OK. I'll play. Took these just now. Sigma 150-600 L mount 600mm f8. 1/1250 sec @ISO1000. One is ES and one is MS. Can you tell them apart? I can't at 200% in LR. IBIS on resting on my front balcony rail. We have a breeze today so there's some differences in composition and focus point. Just a test shot and I only took one frame in each mode.

As an aside I sent my 150-600 for a holiday to Sigma and they said nothing is wrong but it came back sharp..... Hmmmm.....

Hi Flash,

Thanks for showing us these images, and the 500mm with the teleconverter. I really like the image quality on the prime, I think I’m going to buy it for the Sl3…

I am with you on this post, I never use ES anyhow. Never seen shutter slap effects in the real world … only mirror slap on MF.
