I asked them last autumn and they say they can customize the mp, they take the original top and paint them in black chrome instead of black paint, it would coust about 1000 EUR and takes 6 months (back then, now its surely more, 9 or so)

can’t I just interchange with somebody?

Why not just do a little test like I did? You can take a digital photo with a 50mm lens and then compare it to the framelines area in CLE

Don’t have a full frame digital camera.

I shoot a few 40mm and have never noticed difference in my compositions…

I sent an MP Black paint to Wetzlar last year for conversion to Black Chrome. They still accept it. It took about 8 months, 1500 euros and they even let me customise it further and add the Leica script on top.

I've also placed an MA top plate on an MP in the past. They are fully compatible.

Good to know. Maybe I get an m/A owner to swap with me… 1500 Euro is too much for me

Leica can do a lot in customization.

As I saw some pretty nice A la carte, I asked prices (starting from a current MP)

-top plate engraving "LEICA CAMERA WETZLAR GERMANY" don't know if they modify current on or just swap with available pieces : 200E

-Black frame counter : 125E

-change of magnification is also possible 600-800

@brothers.paintshop on instagram is working on making replacement top plates for M6 in black chrome, maybe they'll fit MP. If so, then you'd just have to buy a black chrome bottom plate.

I looked at some pictures and while the instagram is not the best medium it looks like the paint has dot accumulation and it is not fine and consistent.

maybe mine is well calibrated, but i never misfocused either with the 40 or the 90mm wide open. But for wider lenses i use my M6, which is way way way better to focus

Sumilux F1.4. The sumicron 40 is fine.

I'm fine with customizing and dig the many options out there, But selling self made top and bottom covers are simply product piracy for me. I wouldn't want to be the customer who buys a used M and get a cam with god knows what quality fake parts.

But what happens if you need to replace something Leica can't or won't provide? Right now if you have a corroded zinc top plate your options are limited. You may or may not be able to find a repairer with a stock of original zinc M6 covers, and I don't think Leica sell them anymore. Brass tops aren't available for the old cameras either, though perhaps Leica can make them internally on their CNC machines if you pay them enough money for a rebuild. Third parties have stepped up to provide other unavailable parts too, from beam splitters for the LTM cameras to brightline masks for the M2 and M3. Without these parts the cameras couldn't be repaired. They aren't being made to deceive, as 'fake' suggests, but to fulfill an otherwise unmet need.
