I have a 35mm Summaron 2.8 lens, made in 1960. It's a superb lens - tiny, well built, and relatively fast. It compliments any Leica M camera. If I try to manually select it on either my M9 Monochrom, or M11, there's no option available.

I just code it as a vintage 35mm Summicron, there is no problem. The lens works great. I just wonder - especially on such a sophisticated camera as the M11 - why didn't they add it onto the list?

I've opted to code my Summaron 2.8/35mm ('60 too) as a Summarit 2.5/35mm. A programmable six lens option would do for me, just like my Fuji GFX.

If the Fuji ninjas can do it, it really shouldn't be too difficult for the gnomes in Wetzlar ... 🤔

Not the first time i read a reference to Fuji cameras here. Would you mind to explain how it works? Just curious as when i used an X-E2 with M lenses a couple years ago, the only option i had was entering the focal length of the lens. The lens ID was totally ignored by the camera so for a 35mm Summilux or Summicron, for instance, the exif data only said in both cases  "Lens Info: 35mm f/?".

so now Leica should help its competitors really?

No. They're helping their customers.  They have no competition in the portion of the market they occupy. There might have been a time 20 years ago, but those days are long gone. No sane person is seriously comparing lenses that are 5x to 15x the cost.  And conversely no one is thinking, 'I'm going to spend an extra $14,000 for a 75mm 'lux over CV Nokton so I dont have to deal with lens coding'. It is ludicrous to think that making life more difficult with non-Leica lenses is helping their bottom line in any measurable way.

How would you feel about the usability of your A7 if Sony prevented you from ID'ing anything other than an official E-Mount lens?

I would regard it as quite normal.

That's a top tip - thank you.

I was under the impression that It allowed to manually set focal length.  (necessary for IBIS among other things)

I can enter focal length manually but the camera needs an adapter that has no electrical contact with either the lens or the camera. No way to know that the lens is a 90/4 for instance, let alone an Elmar or a Tessar.

To what degree is the coding actually important? It does two things - as far as i know:
Information of what lens is used in the EXIF; Camera-corrected, non-wanted behaviour of the lens.

For me, the first thing is of no real importance. I am mostly interested in the image, not in the information.
The last thing is maybe important - if it does something obvious and necessary, and not just "something".
Third party lenses (second party may be more correct...) can of course not be corrected unless the camera-producer is very kind and helpful to those who aren't "loyal" to the brands own lenses.

See below from earlier in the thread. It's important for the M11 to know the focal length of the lens attached:

That's not the main reason I was wanting to select a profile. A profile is required in order for the M11 to know what focal length is attached. That is necessary for the functioning of the digital stabilization feature when in magnified live view. It's also necessary for the automatic minimum shutter speed feature to work when using Auto ISO.

I can get around the above issue by selecting any manual profile of the same focal length as the lens I have attached, but that comes with unnecessary baggage such as incorrect EXIF lens name, vignetting correction applied to JPEGs and visible in live view that may not match the lens being used, etc. It also is not a viable workaround if the there is not an available profile of matching focal length (40mm, etc.).

You can enter both focal length and lens description.

I can do the same in PP too. Do you mean you enter the ID of the lens in the camera? Just curious.

No sure what you mean: what is a lens ID ?

The recent Fuji models have a menu item (mount adaptor setting) where you can register focal length and description for up to six lenses.

Both end up in the EXIF information.

The focal length is used for the IS mode.

Hm, soon Leica-M becomes nearly as complex and filled with functions as every other camera...😵
Why don't put an electronic finder in in the old and mechanically complicated viewfinder and even introduce autofocus-lenses.
But, please, keep the traditional shape of it.
😄

I did not know, sounds like a good idea on reflection. Thank you for sharing.

Asking Leica to make CV lens profiles is 🤯. Why should they invest in getting the lenses of other companies to get an in-camera profile? Voigtlander, Zeiss, TT, ... where does it end?

BTW Sony limits the FPS on all a7 when a non-sony lens is attached.

we just need an EVF on the film M cameras 😃
