Firmwares seem to have changed anything for me. See the history of my Sony Tough cards above. Same for an UHS2 Sandisk card that caused freezes on my M11 before firmware 1.6.1 and works perfectly now.

As someone who uses multiple systems from multiple brands (9 brands currently. 25 camera models.) Leica is the only one that has issues reading from a normal SD card formatted in camera. It's not good

With all due respect i seem to have read this kind of statement about most if not all firmwares of both M240 and M11 bodies since freezes appeared on those cameras. As far as i'm concerned, i've got s

Again, why does every other major camera manufacturer not have issues like this? Fault lies 100% on Leica.

If the problem persists, i would try to format your card with SD Card Formatter. Interesting to note than my current Sony Tough card worked perfectly out of the box with a single format in the M11 though.

I'm not talking about hardware since my camera works flawlessly and i tried to explain above that firmwares are the opposite of constant given that SD cards that were causing freezes under earlier firmwares do work perfectly on my same camera under the excellent (for me) firmware 2.0.2. Now i cannot say anything about your camera of course but i'm somewhat surprised when i read complaints from people keeping a faulty camera. I would not keep mine for a minute if it behave the way you're describing. Nothing personal.

I also had some SD card issues on 2.02 with the M11. I didn't realize that you could transfer from internal storage to the card in the camera, so once I found out how easy that is to do- I just switched to internal permanently. Now I just transfer to the card in camera to get the images into the computer, and this completely alleviates the issue. I guess it might not be a firmware issue based on what's in this thread - not sure but better safe than sorry!

Yep. I just plug it in and copy across via usb-c. Seemless. I've got a Sandisk 256gb v60 card in the camera which I've run through a low level format on SD Card Formatter (took quite a while) and if I ever fill up the internal memory on a trip (seems unlikely!) I'll transfer across to the card.

I use quick format mostly. Works fine with both v60 and v90 Sandisk cards. Does little harm to try.

SD Formatter's quick format only erases the file/directory entries (ie - file names and folder names).  The camera's raw files (data) are technically still there and can be easily recovered with file recovery utilities.  After a "quick format" the card shows X amount free and the camera over-writes whatever data was previously there.  The Quick Format option does nothing in terms of erasing the card.  A quick format is the same thing most digital cameras do when they "erase" or "format" data card using the in-camera option.  

Whereas the overwrite option erases the data.  This low level format effectively restores the SD card to like new status, comparable to when it was first purchased - meaning, a "blank" memory card.  The camera write new data in consecutive blocks, rather than skipping around and writing in non-consecutive memory blocks.  In theory an SD card that was formatted via the "overwrite option" should perform better.

Quick format a card with SD Card Formatter, and set a label e.g. "Leica M11". Put the card in the camera, switch it on and wait a few seconds, switch the camera off again, remove the card and put it in the PC/Mac reader. The label is already replaced by "LEICA M".

Formatting cards with SD Card Formatter does not prevent SD card errors and does not prevent unreadable .DNG files.

The only way since 2.0.2. to prevent problems is to write .DNG's to IN only, and transfer them either by direct cable connection or by copying to a SD card.

Or simply quick format a card with SD Card Formatter in your computer and insert it as is in the camera. You can format it again in the camera if you wish but it is not mandatory in my 10+ years experience with Leica and Sony cameras at least.

I kicked off this thread some weeks ago, and admittedly have not checked in on it for a while until today. My sense, after reading through the various problems people are having, is that this is a firmware problem that Leica is obligated to fix!
 

In late January i went on a trip to Mexico and shot hundreds of photos on both my M11 and M11M. I only had problems, this time, using my M11 — one notice that my SD card was full, as well as that red dot swirl. I removed the battery, reinstalled it, and didn't have the same problem, but did lose several pictures I had just taken. This is ridiculous - and the uncertainty people have about whether their cards will work is as well.

I’ve had every digital M since 2006, and of course have had to deal with the occasional freeze that gets fixed by a quick removal and reinsertion of the battery. But this is different — we’re not just losing opportunities, we’re actually losing pictures we’ve taken. I don’t want to change my workflow to saving to the INT drive; I want to continue using SD cards as my primary drive. In the six weeks since this thread has begun, I really hope Leica has been working on a firmware update that will fix this now wisely documented problem.

The only way?  My experience is different.  I do not use your procedure and I have not had any problems.  Perhaps I've been lucky.

As for SD Card Formatter... my opinion based upon nothing much is don't bother if all you are going to do is a quick format.  I use the program to do an overwrite format on every new card I receive.  That is about the only time I format a card.
