What is the most exotic lens you've used on the S system and why ?

Recommended Posts

A rare guest in Western Norway; the mandarin duck (Aix galericulata). Lens: Leica 280mm APO-R w/1.4 APO-R Extender (with the lei-ko adapter; https://lei-ko.de). ISO800, 1/90 s, handheld, on S3. Why: With 1.4x extender, the wonderful 280-APO-R focuses to infinity.

Poor man's/woman's S120... 😉. Lens: ISCO-Optic Ultra-MC 125mm f2 (on S006). Why: For fun & and for non-perfectness.

I love your images. Could you tell us more about your set up? Adapter? and post processing?

Well actually I have 24, 35, 70, 120 and 180. I am doing mostly landscape so the 24 and 3 are my favorites even though I have come through some flare issues when shooting towards the sun with the 24... I am really interested by the 30-90 actually and might give it a shot at some time. But I am so passionate at people using older, vintage lenses on this platform that I would like to see more of your "vintage" ..."exotic" lenses pictures on this platform... The S is not dead!

That house looks more like it was built by an Icelandic carpenter...þetta reddast. (þetta er bara djók sko, fyrir íslendingar sem er að lesa það!)

Another vote for the 280/4 APO-Telyt R with the 1.4x APO and Lei-Ko adapter ring on S(006)

Pentax 67 400/4. Makes the Leica look like a Sony A7. (I have the 400/4 ED/IF, which is a much better and heavier lens, but doesn't look as menacing.)

But the most exotic has to be the Zeiss 350/5.6 Superachromat, seen here with the APO 1.4 XE

And, of course, Soup - showing his enthusiasm for the Zeiss (used here without the 1.4 XE)

Finding a good TS solution at a useful focal length for Leica S is difficult.  However, Phase One released a 45mm f3.5 TS lens in 2008 with a Mamiya 645 mount.  This was a joint venture with Hartblei and was based on Hartblei's Super Rotator with improvements.  The lens offers 12 mm of shift and 8 degrees of tilt that are independent of each other so any combination is possible and in any direction.  Comparing Leica's 30 to 90 zoom at 45mm with the Phase One TS lens in the f8 to f16 range shows similar image quality in the centre but sharpness fall off towards the edges and noticeable centre barrel distortion with the Phase One lens.  Fortunately Capture One has a lens profile for this particular lens that corrects these deficiencies.  The lens feels high quality and is fun to use.
