So is it just me - or is the numbering format for the M11 just illogical? I am used to my Nikon Z7II for general work - and on that camera I can create a new folder every time I want to start a new one (and here is the punch line) WITHOUT changing the image numbering sequence. So the folder number changes - but the images inside the folder continue on from the previous folder. This allows one to edit images from multiple folders and save to a new place without any of the image numbers interfering with one another. Not so the Leica apparently. The only way to create a new numbered folder is to "reset image numbering" - which continually resets the image numbers to what I just saved from the previous folder. This is creating problems for me as when I save something I am often dealing with files that have the same image numbers!

So clearly I cannot use the same method as with the Nikon unfortunately. As this is my first digital Leica - I am unsure if they are all set up this way or not - but I assume so. So anyone have a workaround for this, other than just never creating a new folder? I guess I can still change the first letter of the file in each new folder - pretty cumbersome!

It appears to me to be quite logical that the camera resets the image numbers when you select “ reset image numbering” The solution appears to be to deselect the item. To change the image number   on any Leica:  insert an empty card, take one image , change the numbering  or letter to taste, insert the card again, take one more image. Then you get the new numbering on the subsequent images.

I am not disputing the logic of that - but they are forcing me to reset the image numbers in order to create a new folder? That seems illogical to me. Maybe I'm missing something? As stated in my post - I guess I can re-label the image numbers with a different letter each time I create a folder - but that is an extra step - and I doubt I will remember which letter I was on before ( I am old now you know...)😄

I don't see a way to change the numbers - only the letter:

EDIT FILE NAMES

  • ▸  Select Camera Settings  in the main menu

  • ▸  Select Edit File Name

    • A keyboard submenu is displayed.
    • The input line contains the factory setting “L” as the first letter

of the file name. Only this letter can be changed.

  • ▸  Enter a letter of your choice (see p. 56)

  • ▸  Confirm

    Notes

    • The change to a file name applies to all subsequent shots or until a new change is made. The sequential number will not be affected; but it will be reset when a new folder is created.

In the firmware 2.0.x release, Leica changed the folder numbering to use the first three places in the filename, rather than just an initial letter, with the numbering jumping.  I don't know what they had in mind, but it seems to me that they are heading in the direction of allowing the files to be accumulated in named directories.  The numbering scheme just hasn't gotten there yet.  Maybe in a later release.

You know - if they would just put the folder numbers as the first three in the image name - that would solve it! An easy fix. You can see by the image below how this is a problem - every single one of these folders starts with image number L1000001.DNG. I would love to see L1450001.DNG - problem solved! I have filled out their survey and left my comments about this - fingers crossed.

From the screenshot above, you seem to be working on Mac OS. It is easy to set up Quick Actions to prefix file names. Maybe that would help you? Run the action on the folder just after copying it over to the Mac and it prefixes the names to make them unique.

Not sure why you want to force create a new folder on your SD card.
I always format SD cards in camera, and then just copy the files from wherever they end up on the SD card to my Mac. To import the files, I select them based on creation date if needed.

Thank you dpitt - you're right - I can use the rename action on Mac to just add the folder number to the beginning of each file name - viola! I guess I am just used to using the Nikon system for the past 25 years, which functions differently. I like to create a new folder for each shooting session. I don't like 800 images in one folder!
