Hi,

the last week end I have been shooting a lot of long-exposure pictures with my M11m + Leica hand grip.

The Arca-swiss compatible hand grip makes it very easy to put and remove the camera from the tripod. However, I am really missing an L-bracket when it comes to vertical shots.

What solution do you recommend? Is there an L-bracket which I can put on top of the Leica hand grip and easily remove when I am done with the long-exposure work?

Thanks

I’ve always had L-Brackets on my Nikons and Fujis but feel one would spoil the aesthetic appeal of the M11, so my solution (while shooting the Zürich Christmas markets last evening BTW) was to turn my tripod ball-head 90 degrees. Not quite the functionality of a l-bracket but it worked pretty well and good enough for me.

Oh, I just noticed this is M11 forum :) I don't use L-brackets on my M cameras, only SL with bulkier lenses.

The main reason I use L-brackets on my SL is for shooting vertically or upside-down on a tripod. When I shot studio portraits, keeping the heavy camera steady on a tripod in a vertical position for an hour or so was challenging. Over time, it would slightly drop, but that issue was resolved when I got my first L-bracket. Otherwise, if the camera is positioned horizontally, there's no need for an L-bracket. Some might argue it adds extra protection, but I don't find that necessary.

Here is what I came up with by using an Arca-Shop Mini-L-Bracket

Not elegant, but it solves the problem.

Thanks.

Same here. I do long exposure photography quite often (infra red) and I’ve never had a problem with the ball head slipping down but maybe my exposures aren’t long enough - usually 2 mins or less. If you can’t find an l-bracket you like, could you adjust the length of two of the tripod legs so that having the ball head fully rotated gave you the view you wanted with no chance of slippage?  Bit of a rubbish work around though.

My Sirui ball-head rotates a full 90 deg so the camera horizon in portrait mode is perfectly level. I also don’t find the rotation process that much of a hassle.

Somewhat of a unique solution, but since you already have the Leica Hand Grip with the Arca-swiss in combination with the Peak Design Tripod.  The head on this tripod rotates for vertical shots.  In a previous post when someone asked about which tripod people recommend for the M11, I recommended the Peak Design for the following reasons, but now I can add the idea of doing vertical shots without an "L-Bracket".

Peak Design Carbon Fiber without a question.

  • Lightweight but also Sturdy
  • Excellent compact design and great looking as well.  Packs down to the diameter of a water bottle.
  • Mounting bracket works well with Leica M handgrip/L bracket.  Secure but yet very easy mounting and releasing of camera
  • Unique but extremely easy adjustments for height, level, angle, etc.
  • Works well with other Peak Design bags/accessories for carrying it
  • Compatible with the peak design anchors and straps for another optional carry method
  • Includes mounting bracket for mobile devise

And now * Allows for vertical shots with M11 Leica Hand Grip

Expensive but hands down the best tripod I have used and perfect for the M.

For your M11m with the Leica hand grip, you might want to check out the Really Right Stuff L-Bracket. It’s a bit on the pricey side, but the build quality is excellent and it should fit your needs perfectly for long-exposure photography.
