Daniel Ortego Posted November 21, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ok, I guess my subtle hints here and elsewhere wasn’t enough to solicit a corrective action. My brand new, and out of the box 28-cron’s lens hood is crooked whereby the hood is nearly 5/8” off center when mounted on the M8. It truly looks like crap! You can easily see that it’s off from nearly 30-feet away.Yes, the white dots align just fine and based on a response, it’s just the accessory carrier being a bit off during assembly. Common sense tells me that I can just use a small jeweler’s screwdriver to loosen three setscrews, give it a slight turn and tighten. However, I’ve found that most anything on the Leica is not what it appears. In fact, NJ wants me to bag and ship it out, but I think it's just what they say when it's a new lens. Any feedback is appreciated. Regards,
Advertisement Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Hi Daniel Ortego, Take a look here Lens Hood messed up. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted November 21, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 21, 2007 Daniel, do you mean that the hood is rotated compared to where it should be? If now, how in the world is it 5/8 off centre? Can you post a picture? Since it is new, I would return it to Leica. You could use a small screwdriver to release the set screws but I really think this is something Leica should fix for you and fix perfectly. Leica once produced a camera with a share certificate in the company. I think instead they should include shares in UPS/Fedex/DHL...
Daniel Ortego Posted November 21, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted November 21, 2007 Ok, perhaps my unit of measure is not so accurate. Basically, you mount the lens to the camera, set it flat on a table and the one corner of the lens hood touches the table while the other corner is at a sharp angle upward. No PIC’s since I loaned my P&S to my son out of town and my other M8 is on my yaught somewhere off the coast of France. Sorry, couldn't help that but anyway, I suppose if you recommend that I ship it out, I'll follow your advice. Heaven only knows when I'll see it again. I realized when I bought into Leica that I may likely have maintenance issues although I didn’t expect it right out of the box. On second thought, I suppose I could take a photo of a mirror and post it that way. Gee, this all provokes artistic innovation but maybe this explanation is now more clear. Daniel Ortego Posted November 21, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted November 21, 2007 Daniel, do you mean that the hood is rotated compared to where it should be? If now, how in the world is it 5/8 off centre? .... Thanks Mark, Well, go to any wall hanging in your home and tilt it 5/8-3/4 inch and move about your business. Eventually, you'll start cocking your head when you look at it or it will just drive you crazy. In short, crooked is the opposite of straight and for this anal-retentive M8 owner, it’s simply unacceptable. Regards,
marknorton Posted November 21, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 21, 2007 Daniel, So what you're saying is that if you look at the lens from the front, the hood is rotated from the horizontal so that when you set the camera on a flat surface, one corner of the hood is touching but the other is not? In that case, the accessory carrier is misaligned on the barrel and is corrected by loosening the 3 set screws, turning it and tightening. I'd still let Leica do it, pain though it is. lct Posted November 21, 2007 Share #6 Posted November 21, 2007 ....Yes, the white dots align just fine and based on a response, it’s just the accessory carrier being a bit off during assembly... Daniel, the white dot of the lens is at the right place i guess. If so, you've just got a hood problem right? So why not change it right now? Yours is too wide for your M8 anyway as it is made for full frame film. Then i'd suggest that you order the Leica hood # 12589 (first pic) which is made for the Summilux 35/1.4 asph but fits well your 28/2, or a mere screw-in one like the B+W below (2nd pic). Cheaper ones can be found on eBay AFAIK.

FWIW, I tried this hood on my 28 Cron, and was not satisfied with the fit. It "fits" but I wouldn't say "well." Daniel, the hoods on both my 28 Cron and 24 Elmarit (others?) are extremely snug in terms of tightness of the inner mounting ring of the hood on the lens barrel. It's difficult to get them on or off cleanly, and if they are moved out of parallel while fitting can jam unpleasantly. Your hood may have jammed in a rotated position and now be stubborn in coming back off. Gentle but persistent wiggling may free it up. It isn't really what one expects of a $3200. lens right out of the box - hope you don't have to send it back for such a seemingly simple thing... lct Posted November 21, 2007 Share #8 Posted November 21, 2007 The 35Lux shade (pic 1) is more protective in case of drop or bump but the B+W (pic 2) makes it more comfortable to rotate the aperture ring i feel. Matter of tastes i guess.
R.Costello Posted November 21, 2007 Share #9 Posted November 21, 2007 Daniel, As I understand it you just recently bought this lens - new. I have just purchased the same lens through PopFlash, and it fits perfectly out of the box. I did remove the 'Hood' to install the UV/IR filter which went right on as did the reinstall of the Hood. I would suggest calling your dealer and get a replacement. Please don't try to fix this yourself. Leica should make it good if your dealer doesn't. I actually thought it might be something simple although after Marks comments, it does look like the accessory carrier was assembled/aligned improperly at the factory. Thanks to all who responded. Based on the first PIC, my lens hood would have to line up in dead center between f2 and the set screw to the left in order to be level when mounted. charlesphoto99 Posted November 22, 2007 Share #12 Posted November 22, 2007 FYI: I ran across a photo today of Vaclev Havel with an M6 and a 28 Elmarit. The hood was at he same cockeyed angle and this was supposedly a camera given him by Leica. So not that unusual. This is the three volume Design classics by Phaidon. Bad photo to illustrate the elegance of the M and its a full page pic.
